Not sure if you have kids but my sons soccer has helped us connect with a lot pf parents. Also if you're in a neighborhood, why not go door to door with to your immediate neighbors and invite them over for drinks/appetizers? Always worked for us.. It's really apparent in our neighborhood, the people that don't put an effort to be social end up wit what they put into it-- nothing..

For older women (50+ and even those in your 40's) try The Red Hat Society. http://www.redhatsociety.com

You can find a local group on this page: http://www.redhatsociety.com/search.lasso? You will see all the groups listed in an area, either by city or zip code and whether it's an open group or not (open means they are accepting new members).

I moved to Apex and found a several quilting groups to join that had a monthly meeting and thru them I found several smaller groups of women to get to know on a more personal level.

Also got into gardening and that got us to know more.

When we moved back to Indiana, I again joined the Quilters Guild and worked with them and found a great internet group of stitchers based in Indiana.

So for me it was a common interest that helped me find others to talk to and get to know.

Church groups and kids activities help.
