The gang problem in NC is real, but I think it is way overhyped by media, politicians, and ESPECIALLY law enforcement (who love to get $$$ for a "gang task force").
I've only drove through and stopped in Hickory a few times, but I've heard good things about that area.
I'm sure that any gang activity in a western NC town is just illegal aliens acting out there pent up "machismo".

Hello I have lived and work in Hickory NC I love it here. There have been a few reports of gangs in our area, but for my years of living here it is a great place to raise children and I have had no problems. Moderator cut: tos violation

Hickory used to be part of my territory and like anywhere, there are good parts and bad parts of town.
I recall one of the bad parts of Hickory (in my experience) is the area north of Hwy 70 in the S. Center St section. I used to run into the beer delivery guys on a regular basis and one of them told me he's been mugged a couple of times on his route there. There was a shooting one day just up the street from one of my customers when I was on a visit there. But that was the result of a problem between a couple of locals.
I never had problems there, but I always felt uneasy in that part of town.

You got it. That area of Hickory used to be referred to as "the hill" and was known for crime - and I am not surprised it still is a bad area.
There are some gangs in Hickory. Gangs are everywhere. However, unless you are involved in drug activity . . . I doubt you would ever cross paths with the gangstas.

i agree. gangs are everywhere. illegals are not the problem. i find that rediculous lol. its a mixture of all races of youth.
but there are definately places in hickory i wouldnt want to live in. an area called "the fab", an area called simply "the projects" and another called "the valley".. which are alll around the same area on southern 127; near mcdonalds. i lived just east of those neighborhoods in kenworth. and never witnessed any gang problems. but im pretty sure they existed.
There are PLENTY of nice areas in hickory, and you will find the "gangs" that do exist don't really act out. ive been to larger citys, such as las vegas, la, etc. where they really have a presence.
this is all just my opinion and how i see hickory. not really a gang problem here. thats charlotte. hickory just trys to immitate its larger neighbor.
