I would not consider it safe, nor good schools.
My husband's family lives there (actually, Deep Run), and they begged us to move there. Not where we wanted to raise a family!!

It is not the most desirable part of NC If you re looking in the eastern part of
NC checkout Greenville Winterville farmville. I stayed in Snow Hill for a couple of weeks in March Even that is not that bad IT had a BoJangles that is all I needed.

From a person who does live in Kinston.
I lived in Kinston for 20 Years, and I can honestly say, I have yet to see a "Gang" and yes we have "shootings", but we don't have "Drive" by shootings and we don't have Gang shootings. I've read people saying that Kinston is 12 mins from a military base, that's not right. We are surrounded by military bases, one in Goldsboro, about 20-25 miles from Kinston, and one in Jacksonville, about 25-30, depending on where you start from. Economic growth is slow here, like most other places I have lived in. I lived in Wilmington for a few years and I couldn't get a "Decent Paying" job and afford to live in the city, unlike in Kinston, the jobs there do pay better than the ones i got in Wilmington and the cost of living in Kinston is way lower. Education does kinda suck, but so does most of North Carolina's from what I hear. But some good things about Kinston is that we are in the center of 4 major cites in N. Carolina. Greenville, New Bern, Jacksonville, and Goldsboro. A lot of people live in Kinston, and work or go to college in other cites. So what i'm trying to say is, that yes we have some problems down here in Kinston, but nearly as bad as some I have seen on the news. If you want to party in a good city, and live in a quiet area, then Kinston is a good place to live, and you can travel 30 mins to Greenville to party.

I always found Kinston to be kind of run-down and sad looking place. Not much in the way of anything to do. I am sure that it is cheaper than Greenville or Winterville. But there is a reason. I think I would much rather live in Ayden (if you like a slow pace) than Kinston. It is much more accessible to Greenville.
Also, seems that the poverty in Kinston (African American areas) is really severe. Stark contrast to the white areas.

Kinston is a difficult place to live. The unemploymnet rate exceeds 12%. The leadership is slow to respond to the development needs of the area. Lenoir County is politically split by those that live north of the Neuse River and those that live south. The population has dropped by over 2000 in the past seven years. The schools suffer from the brain drain - the brightest and best teachers, students and adults have gone elsewhere.

I live in Snow Hill and you were less than 5 minutes from me when you went to Bojangles. Kinston has long had some ups and downs. But right now I can't say much about anyone else's schools after the powder keg we have going on in the high school down here right now. I would advise anyone with high schoolers at this point and time to move to Greene County until we get the thing going on down here resolved. Good luck wherever you move to. And Kinston is in Lenoir County. I was referring to Snow Hill and the schools.

Check out www.lizfreeman.com - she is a realtor in the Greenville area. Kinston is south of Greenville. In Greenville you can find a thriving and quickly growing city - restaurants, theater, East Carolina UNiversity, shopping, and one of the best medical areas in the country. Kinston is not a growing town

um...yes there are gangs in Kinston and gang violence and drive-by shootings. If there is any doubt go to www.kinston.com which is the Kinston Free Press website and type in "drive-by" of "gangs" and see the results.
I lived there for 35 years so.....
It isn't the worst place on earth, there are some good people there and peaceful areas. But there are some places that are not safe at all.
