Tell me all about Lumberton area
My wife may be accepting a teaching job soon in Robeson County/Lumberton. Where is the best place to live with our 1 year old and 4 year old daughters? Please tell us a good safe place to live and maybe name some rental homes or apartments that we can check out. We are from Michigan and know nothing about NC. Thanks much!

It has been a while since I lived in Lumberton, but at the time the better newer homes were in the North Highland Park area near Lumberton High School. Don't know about rentals.

Lumberton is about 45 min. to an hour from the beach. It is right on I-95.
It has a historic downtown, but hasn't really been revitalized --mostly attorneys offices, finance companies, various shops, but there is a really neat restaurant -- believe it is something like Black River Grill? Don't remember the exact name.
There are some nice local boutiques and restaurants -- John's is supposed to be really good. Lumberton has gotten some of the chain stores like JC Penney, Office Depot, and a Sam's Club just opened there. It has an Outback Steakhouse, and all the usual fast food places.
Lumberton and Robeson County has a large amount of Lumbee Indian population --they are currently working to gain federal recognition.
UNC-Pembroke is nearby.
I used to have relatives there, and go through there occassionally.
Any specific questions? I'll try to answer as best I can.

I have family down in Lumberton too. It seems to be an old city, lots of older, well kept neighborhoods. There are also some very expensive homes there too. I agree the downtown has lots of attorney offices. The county court house is in downtown Lumberton and was just renovated a year or so ago.
Personally I like Lumberton. Once you get past the city limits it is surrounded by cotton fields and tobacco fields.

Thanks for the great info. Do you know of any rentals available or recommend any?

I don't. I would contact some local real estate agencies and see what info. they have. My uncle used to work for Century 21 in Lumberton, but doesn't any longer. I know that firm is still there, but I'm not really familiar with residential real estate or rentals in Lumberton.

Lumberton....
A good safe place...IN LUMBERTON? hmmm...it's a bit difficult if you're seeking a rental. Many of the rentals are in not so great neighborhoods. I visted one one time and it was across from a hunting dog kennel and infront of a cow pasture. (I opened the back door and a cow was standing infront of me behind an electric fence!) If you're lucky you perhaps could find a vacancy over near Duck Cove. It's convenient to local shopping (within walking distance) and is off the main road however less than 5 minutes from Lumberton High School, Caroll Middle and Tanglewood Elementary. I've lived in that area for several years without incident. You can check Century 21 or Remax. You can also check the Robesonian.com website where they do have classified listings of rental and homes for purchase. Stay AWAY from Saddletree area especially (gang activity). You may consider looking just OUTSIDE lumberton to perhaps find better/ safer areas to live. Good luck in finding somewhere 'SAFE' in Lumberton! It's not really a place to walk around when it gets dark.

I dont know about the rentals there. There are some older nice neighborhoods, and there are also very expensive, newer homes. It seems like one extreme or the other. My sister actually lives in one of the older neighborhoods off of the Carthage Rd exit off I-95. Its pretty quiet there. Lumberton has its trouble spots though, it aint too hard to know what they are just by looking.

Man, lumberton is hiring a ton of people from Michigan it seems. We were considering going to that area (Rowland) as well as my fiancee got a teaching offer out there.
Was not too sure about the area though, Rowland even more than Lumberton.
