Default Nice small town for a weekend vacation?

Me and my friend have lived in Wilmington our entire lives and we're looking to get away to a nice small town for a weekend vacation sometime around next March or April. Somewhere quaint that we could walk around with small cafes and a park maybe. It doesn't have to have anything historical or landmarks or anything. Does anyone know of anywhere nearby that matches this description?

Blowing Rock would be my first choice to meet that criteria

liitle washington. the most under rated waterfront in NC. Lake mattamuskeet, when the swans are there, is worth the drive as well.
