That's pretty much hitting the nail on the head.

Okay. Glad to hear that we're not being singled out.

By the way, I heard that just about everywhere is shut down when there is an ice storm. Is this true? Do companies really shut down?

It has been known to happen, the factories and third shift places in particular shutting down due to ice storms. If you lose electricity due to the ice on the power lines, there is little you can do without it so what is the point in going to a cold, empty factory?

It's funny to watch all the northerners, though, get into their 4x4's and drive around thinking that driving on ice is the same as snow. IT IS NOT. Your SUV is gonna slide across that ice and flip over!

I've read the boards here off and on for awhile now and I can handle the most of the yankee/northerner drivel that goes on, heck that's part of the reason I moved south, I find the people here more relaxed and more friendly, not to mention how beautiful the country is.

This comment though about northerners not being able to drive on the ice is completely warped. I'm from Minnesota. Guess what we do for fun in the winter? Drive our big ole' SUV's out on the frozen lake so that we can go snowmobiling and or ice fishing. We have icy roads throughout the entire winter, hence the need for us to have all the snow plows we do, which not only plow snow they spread sand, salt and other chemicals to combat the ice. I laugh at all the southerners here who consistently go in the ditch with a little bit of snow or ice, not to mention the problem you guys seem to have driving in the rain. Plus the "Quick the snows a' coming, get to the grocery store and start grabbing all the milk and bread you can" Why? Cuz' ya can't drive yourselves to the store:P This leads me to another question though, why the milk and bread? If you're going to stock up why do you buy perishable items? Two of the fastest spoiling foods you can grab. My husband was born and raised here and even he doesn't get it? He always says "What are they going to do, make milk and bread sandwiches"?

Take a look at Accuweather for Hickory NC. If it gets an ice storm or snow it may be 60 two days later. Like the poster said above. Stock up and stay home. You'll be retired! And while the it is sweltering to the south and east you can drive up to the mountains within an hour and find cooler temps. You can also find snow up there in the winter if you miss it!
Oh yeah, this retirement schtick is all that it is cracked up to be!

I'm a proud born and bred Tarheel. I've never rushed to the store for bread and milk or anything else when ice or snow was forecasted. I know that nine times out of ten, it'll be gone by the next day. (One of the many great things about living here.) We did have a pretty good snowfall a few years ago (Jan. 2001, I believe it was). We had about 21 inches of snow in one day and it lasted for quite awhile.

I've never driven in the ice or snow though and have no intentions of doing so.

As for not being able to drive in the rain, I've never had a problem with it. *shrug* Now, I hear folks in L.A. have near panic attacks over it. lol But around here, it's no big deal. Unless, of course, the roads flood.
