My husband and I are researching on places to live. We are planning on moving in a few years. We currently live in southern Ohio and have decided we wanted to move to a suburb outside of a larger city. The things we are looking for are a slightly warmer heat than Ohio, employment as a paramedic and a job as a nurse at a Children's Hospital, nice parks, a neighborhood with sidewalks, low crime rate, and good schools for our son.

This might be a good starting point to consider..there are 4 listed in NC...2 in Winston Salem, one in Charlotte and on at UNC Chapel Hill.

Children's [Childrens] (Pediatric) Hospitals & Medical Centers

BethandTim How much can you spend and how far will you commute?

There are two children’s hospitals in Charlotte. Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital

Levine Children’s Hospital

And the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital (http://www.jeffgordonchildrenshospital.org/Chospital.html - broken link) is in neighboring Concord.

Those last four could be deal breakers, depending on what areas you look at. Choose wisely.

I've known a few people who have lived in Winston-Salem and absolutely loved it! The weather seems to be pretty moderate there, too - not as snowy and cold in the winter as in the Appalachian mountains north of there - and not as steamy and hot as the southern part of North Carolina can be in the summer.

Winston Salem is a nice town, I have friends who grew up there, but I am very partial to Chapel Hill. It is a smaller college town with a great hospital, great schools, and it is an easy drive to Raleigh/Durham and Greensboro/Burlington. There is not much of a down town though, so if you want to be able to walk everywhere it may not be the place for you, but it is very bicycle friendly and has good public transportation for NC.

You could work at one of the children's hospitals in Charlotte and live in Fort Mill, SC, which is only a few miles outside of Charlotte. It's got some of the best schools in the region and a low crime rate. It's home to the Anne Springs Close Greenway, one of the nicest open spaces in the region. As far as a neighborhood with sidewalks, it depends on where you look. There are a lot of new subdivisions in the town, but Baxter Village is a newish New Urbanist-development. The only downside is that Baxter is a bit on the pricey side.

WOW!!! I used to live in the Ironton OH/Ashland KY area. I also lived in Washington Court House for a short while (I worked at the HUGE Walmart Distribution center there on US 35 as a trucker). My wife is nurse also lol. Anyways, YES YES YES you will LOVE NC!!!

Come on down!!! There are TONS of great suburbs surrounding Charlotte. Take your pick.
