A yankee is someone who comes down here, visits, spends some money, and goes home. A Dam* Yankee is one who comes down here, and stays.
And a ***dam* yankee is one that comes, stays and marries your sister!
And that is the problem with today's society: We are losing our collective sense of humor and the ability to make fun of ourselves without the PC Police intervening.

I used to work in, and later co-own, a decent sized community hardware store. Most everyone who moved into the area eventually came into the store. We had people shop there of all races, religions, from foreign countries, all parts of the US, all sexual orentations, people who needed interperters, I guess you get the message.
We were in the rual part of western NC. No one who came into our store was ever treated differently or rudely unless their actions caused such to happen. All customers got the personal attention that you never see at the large stores. It is the way things are done by decent people.
Most people can get along with each other if both try, even if one person is a dam* yankee.
Really, we're not that bad for hillbillies. We try to brush our tooth and take a bath on Saturday. Fights usually only happen anymore at weddings, funerals, and Sunday dinner.
And when we marry your northern daughters we will buy them a good used pickup to haul wood and yard sale items in. You do like a lot of grandchildren don't you?

And they'll learn how to bait a hook and catch a mess of catfish, or brim and dig for 'arsh taters. Set yourself down on the recliners out there on the front porch and shuck some roastin' ears. Y'all be sweet.

We are ALL Americans I don't care where you are from. Oh and if you want to find out who yankees really are, go ask the Brits and they will say 'all Americans'.

We are all United Staters ("Americans" includes more people than you intended) but that doesn't mean there aren't regional differences. Some people may be willing to give up their regional identity but Southerners are not.

Yankees...
I am a yankee..have I not a yankee's nose...lol. My husband and I moved to Asheville from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan because our daughter lives here. I'm originally from Coastal Maine and I have an accent that I never could get rid of( I tried, but gave it up. I stick out as soon as I open my mouth) even though I have lived most of my life in Michigan, where my husband is from.
Only twice have I had any trouble...We were all set to rent an RV in a local campground, came to pay the rent and the manager took one look at me and refused to even let me see it. It was awful and noone has ever looked at me like they wanted to hurt me, but he did. He even tried to grab at me through my car door. I was really scared. It was soon clear why. I showed up with my sister(I have short hair and a lip ring...and my sister has long hair and we don't look anything alike...he thought we were gay. We're both older women. My sister thought I should have told him the difference but, for one thing, the look on his face and lunging at me, I didn't want to be anywhere near him. My husband's a Veteran, we're unremarkable people and mind our own business. I still think of him.
The second time, I was going to a little place where they had animals and when I went to pay, as soon as he heard my voice, he blurted out 'Oh, you're northeners!' I said,'Can we still go in?' lol! That's all I could think to say! On the whole, I have met some great people, good, good friends. I don't care for Asheville but that makes me the odd duck out. I do think some Northeners give off a snobby air, I'll probably catch heck for saying that, but at least I think some Mainers' tend to be that way. Oh, I see on some messages, the debate on soda...I always called it sodie, until I finally got good sick and tired of the roars of laughter! Soda, just plain soda, to be safe!

gotta respond...
In Maine, at least the old Maine, anyone not born there were 'people from away' no matter how long they've lived in Maine...but all the people who have moved to certain parts of Maine have changed that and I think that's good. People are people and as someone from this site pointed out, we are all Americans, well not everyone. lol.
I have always enjoyed picking up litter, where ever I've lived. I had one friend(native born NC) tell me that it is the rednecks who throw trash out the car windows and I shouldn't bother picking it up 'cause they could throw it quicker than I could pick it up!
I didn't listen to him 'cause, according to Jeff Foxworthy, yup, I'm a redneck. Anyway, I kept what I considered my part mile of road to clean. I can't tell you how many people waved and gave me the O.K. sign, young and old. And that stretch of road not been re-littered. So there!
And if there are those, and I'm sure there is, it's the same everywhere, who wish they hadn't been invaded, well, I understand but don't agree with it.
To the 'Hillbilly who says they'll marry our yankee daughters...lol...buy her a truck to haul wood? Shine that one tooth? Heck, we've been doin' that forever, cord of wood? nothin' to it! Plus mending the fishnets, clammin',crabbin', lobstahin',quahog digger, crab picker, fixin' the kerosene lamps, running to the stream for water, keep the woodstove humpin' in the dead of winter...fillin' the trees with laundry washed out on a washboard and keepin' our figures inspite of all the lard in the fried potatoes!

That's odd because in my experience most small Southern towns are tolerant of "confirmed bachelors" and "spinsters". Every town has a few.

Act like an A.. in NC or SC and you will be called a ******
Act like an A.. in NJ or NY and you will be called a *********
To me.........when you enter any area of life you try and AT LEAST respect the people and culture. Nobody expects you to totally change your lifestyle but they do expect us to respect their lifestyle.
NJ and soon, God willing, a North Carolinian.
