Are we Yankees that bad??
Hello everyone. I am new to this forum, just found it a couple of days ago, and while browsing, it seems that some people from NY that relocated to NC were "Yankee" bashed. I am moving there next month, and when we visited to find our home, everyone seemed very welcoming. We met some of the nicest people who didn't seem to mind at all that we were coming from NY, and exchanged phone numbers with them to get together when we move there. Are we in for a surprise when we go? Do NC people really dislike us Yankees??

They were probably bashed not because they were yankees but because they were snobs who felt like the world revolves around them. Most of us are welcoming and open to northerners. Were you come from makes no difference. What does matter is how you hold your self and your personality. You sound like you'll have no problems

I'm usually criticized more by fellow transplanted yankees making fun of me for going back north than by southerners for being from NY.

think of it more like this:
thinking of things on personal terms, there really isn't a difference in southerners and northerners that I can tell. Generally, it has more to do with being out in public, driving a car, social settings, and when dealing with strangers.

Yankees
I think you will run into a lot of people who who like to tease "Yankees" about their Yankee-dom, but most of it is tongue-in-cheek with no bad intentions. I'm sure that you will have some people refer to you as a Yankee, but don't take it as an insult - Southerners have a self-deprecating sense of humor and assume - sometimes incorrectly - that other people do also (and I say this as a Southerner).
Sure, you will run into some rednecks who hate everything about anyone who isn't from their area, but those people are the exception and not the rule (and they're probably bitter about their lives for other reasons that are beyond the scope of this post). Generally speaking, the larger the town or the more prosperous the community (e.g., the Summerfield community you asked about), the less true "anti-Yankee" sentiments you will find. By prosperous, I mean middle-class or higher, not necessarily Donald Trump wealth.

Hi Jackie- I would go with your initial impression of the folks you met in NC. Seems like you were equally nice as well. So I think you probably have an authentic first hand experience as to what to expect

Probably depends on WHERE in NC you're going. A very conserative rural area, small town or "exclusive" suburb is one thing....the downtown funky core of a major city is another. Us city folks usually love the Yankees!!!

I agree with this. If there's anything most Southerners tend to enjoy, it's banter and good-natured ribbing.
And count me as one of the conservative Southerners who does welcome Yankees.

It really comes down to a lack of manners or tact shown by some folks. They probably aren't even aware of their abrasive personality (as perceived by Southerners).
I can tell you this, if you are worried about how others will perceive you, you won't have any problems.
Also, the farther South you go in NC, you will find that everyone residing North of the nearest geographical landmark (usually a river that was the scene of a Civil War battle), is a Yankee.
For instance, here where I live, everyone North of the Tar River is considered a Yankee, no matter that they were born and raised in the Tarheel state.
If I go downt to South Carolina, everyone in North Carolina is pretty much a Yankee.
Because I grew up in Southeastern Va. but moved down to NC about 23 years ago, I am considered the worst type of Yankee....one who moved down and stayed! I'm what is known as a "**** Yankee".
But really the only yankees are those living North of Rocky Mount! See how it works?
