When I came down here in '93, I was afraid my Asian daughter would suffer from discrimination. Instead, the first year of school here, she was voted middle school president in a school that was fully integrated. She also found a large community of Asians and lots of Asian friends. (In the city I grew up, one of my closest friends was Vietnamese, but other than that, I rarely saw Asians back then.)
My daughter did say that in high school, kids tended to break into groups according to race.
The only time I ever heard anything negative in Raleigh about any newcomers was when people from NJ/NYC area were in stores speaking VERY LOUDLY about EVERYTHING. It was very jarring. You could just see people near them rolling their eyes and shaking their heads. It's been years since I've seen that, though.
