Good thread. How about some input from former Long Islanders? It gets HOT here - we have our 95+ heatwaves too.

Where in Florida and where in North Carolina? Not all areas of NC are normally hot in the summertime. Normal highs in July for the Boone-Blowing Rock area is around 77 degrees. Some other areas are even less.

Anywhere in the mountains (like Boone) will stay cooler....when it does get hot though the altitude/temperature mix can be a challenge for someone not used to it. Not as bad as it can get in, say, Denver, which is higher up and can still get in the 100-degree range.

I moved from out west, to NC, about 9 years ago. It is pretty hot during the summer. They have ALOT of heat advisories and HUMIDITY!!! It gets so hot sometimes, that all you wanna do is stay inside...LOL!
Maybe in the mountain parts of NC, like Hickory or Asheville areas, it probably isn't AS HOT...but Moore County areas gets HOT HOT HOT!
The heat is OK for me, but it is the HUMIDITY that gets ya!
Every summer seems to get hotter and hotter. If you are not used to the high humidity and heat, I am not saying to not go to NC, I would just stay in teh mountain regions or have a very powerful A/C...LOL!
Good luck!

I grew up in FL and have spent the last two summers in NC. Comparing Raleigh heat to Miami heat, Miami's is much worse. It gets very hot in both places, but FL stays oppressively hot with humidity much longer and only has a few months of relief every year. I hear people here in Raleigh complain about the humidity, but to me it is nothing compared to what it's like in FL. When it rains in Raleigh during the summer, the rain cools things off - in FL, rain makes it more like a sauna. And all that stuff about the ocean breeze in Miami is a myth, unless you consider hot air blowing around to be a relief!

I did wetland delineations for a Soil and Environmental Consulting company for a few years, in the central and eastern part of the state, and without a doubt the hottest stretch of the state has to be from Raleigh to Fayetteville to the Sandhills. So muggy it will take your breath away, and we are right in the thick of it this week!

It's so muggy out tonight that you can't handle being outside too long. But, this is the first day this summer that I have said anything like that. It must be heat index of over 100 before I stay inside, and that is what I am doing right now. Otherwise the weather is perfect here, heck is that not why we have air conditioning?

Default 110 heat index

The heat index in Southeastern NC and Northeastern SC today is suppposed to be up to 110 degrees. That was reported on Wilmington, NC and Florence SC TV stations this morning. (We checked both to make sure it wasn't a mistake.)
Yes, NC is really hot and humid in the summer (and sometimes in the spring and fall, too!)
