Alligators do absolutely exist in the SE corner of the state. You are extremely unlikely to see them in any urban area here however unless released as a pet.
This is about as far north as they go so they do exist here but not like what you would find in places like Florida. And you won't find them naturally habitating in Asheville or Raleigh, although you might find one swimming in the ocean. Back around '98 there was one found drifting out in the Atlantic near I think Wrightsville Beach. It made state-wide news and there was a picture of it, can't find it anymore though.
Are there alligators/crocs in North Carolina? Around the Raleigh or Asheville areas?
We're looking for a place to relocate and a lot of people have suggested North Carolina by the standards we're looking for. However, I just need to know if there are alligators there.
I have lived in North Carolina for most of my life, Raleigh, Brunswick County, Fayetteville and Harnette County. I am also a avid fisherman so I travel the state a lot. I have seen gators north of Lillington on 401, the Tar River west of Greenville and on the beaches of Oak Island. I have seen the most Alligators in Brunswick and Columbus Counties. Alligators live in Greenfield Lake in the middle of Wilmington and cross Carolina Beach Rd all the time. There are a lot more gators in NC than people think!!!
