I was born in NJ lived there till I was 25. Lived in Delaware, NC and PA and have to tell you that happens everywhere. If people get an impression of you they do not like they may be standoffish.
I loved NC and cannot wait to go back. Delaware is not my taste at all. I met few locals there that were to MY liking (reverse snobbery there).
PA was not so bad once we got out of the Philly area (where my father and his family are from) the mentality was just awful.
We live in Southern PA (doesn't get much more south) and it is very nice here very warm and comfortable but I need to FINALLY live in a city, so we are going. Not because I hate it because I want to move back to NC.
For those of you looking for MD or DE or PA my house is up and you can PM me for details. It's quiet out here and the neighbors are from everywhere, very friendly family community.
Ch I sent you a PM. Delaware schools are not so great.

I don't know I lived in northern NY, then Charlotte NC, then Annapolis, MD...of all three NC was the most unwelcoming. I have never felt like an "outsider" here in Maryland. They are very nice and welcome everyone of all races, religions, different states you name it. When I lived in NC it was the whole north VS south, black VS white, Hispanic VS illegal immigrants, Poor VS rich, NC VS SC, rednecks VS city dwellers...it was INSANE. That is why I left Charlotte. I had never seen soo much racism and discrimination then there.

Several questions

1) Where is all this growth coming from?
-Northeast
-New England
-Rust belt (PA, WV, OH, MI)
-Midwest?
-Mid Atlantic (DC)

2) Why is it coming to NC?

3) Where in NC are they going...to current metro areas like Charlotte/Raleigh/Greensboro OR will they be sprawled around the whole state?

4) Scenic rural areas like Currituck, Elizabeth City, New Bern, Goldsboro, will those remain rural or be engulfed, and if so WHY since they are in the middle of nowhere?

5) Is NC going to be able to preserve it's lush rural character or is going to be an ugly see of sprawl like Northern VA, where I live, gosh I hope not.
NC is so scenic, it would be so sad.
Won't your government and environmental groups help protect the land?

My guess would be Baby Boomer retirees who don't need a local source of income. Huge population group looking for a place to retire away from the rat-race, but close enough to easily visit children and grandchildren along the DC-Philadelphia-NYC-Boston employment corridor.

All Ihave to say is WOW!!! For months I have been arguing with the southerners that it is not the northerners that are destroying NC. Out of the top 8 migrating states into NC...NY is the ONLY northern state!!! WOW!!! Thank you soooooo much for posting this

Kind of. I imagine a large portion of those from Florida (half-backs) and Virginia (Washington, DC suburbs) are actually native to the the northeastern U.S. Personally, I went from SE Pennsylvania to NC to DC Metro and back to NC.
