Smmmokin!!!
I know there are alot of people of this forum that already live in NC, but there are also a lot that are relocating.
Does anyone else appreciate the fact that you could SMOKE in the restaurants and bars?
I know this is a touchy subject , but being from New Yawk, I was in shell shock that you could actually sit at your table after dinner and enjoy a cigarette!!!! I know this sounds sooooooooooo ridiculous, but it was just one more perk for moving there
Can't wait to get there, 20 days and counting!!!!!!!!!

Preaching to the wrong crowd. There was a thread about this a while ago where a concerned transplant liked the smoking ban in NY and was wonderinf if it would ever happen in NC. That is the one thing that most transplants from New York don't like about NC's "freeness". The smoking ban is ONE policy that NYS got right. And they won't ever ban smoking here because this is definitely tobacco country.

I am disgusted by the nasty smell of cigarette smoke on my clothes and skin almost every time I leave a restaurant or bar. I need to shower, change clothes, and put the clothes I was wearing in the washing machine the moment I arrive home.

You'll get a harrumph from me, too.
I'm normally for less regulation, less government intervention, etc ... but like most humans who value their health (and, I agree with the previous poster ... their smell) I wished this was a nationwide ban.
Good for Marriott hotels, BTW, they've announced that ALL their properties will be smoke free for ALL rooms! Nice work Marriott.
But I know I'm moving to tobacco country, so it would be hard to expect them to bite the hand that (used to) feed them. Hopefully eventually, though.

Why do you go to a place that permits smoking? You're actually helping the establishment with your patronage. Hit them were it hurts, your business.
The non-smoking places are not hard to find. In my area, the non-smoking places seem to be in the majority.

Agree. I eliminated this problem a long time ago. I stopped going to any restaurant or bar where smoking is allowed. I also don't stay in hotels where smoking is allowed. Avoid anywhere indoors where there's smoking. I avoid being in proximity of people smoking when I'm outdoors. I wish smoking was banned from the face of the planet. But I am not holding my breath

No, no, no -- I'm not preaching. Really. I am not one of those.
I had never visited NC before that trip, and was just shocked that you could light up in a restaurant. BUT....the restaurant was smoker segregated, 1st floor non-smokers, 2nd floor smokers. I so get that non-smokers don't want to smell it, be near it, etc., and I respect that.
But, being a smoker, like I stated before, was just another perk for me.

As a nurse with an assorment of respiratory problems that I have to wonder if they came from second hand smoke or not, I would welcome a ban to smoking anywhere. I mean Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville has just put into practice not only a hospital ban but a grounds ban as well. You can't even go to your car and smoke with the window or down and put the little critter out in your own ashtray and long as you're on the grounds. And do you know what the hard line smokers are complaining about now? They are exercising their right to the 12-18 or so inches if it is that much that belongs to DOT and their 30 foot right away. This is the small space that comes down when you step off the curb but before you get to the actual highway. They are so desperate to smoke while at work they are willing to stand on this small space with cars wizzing by them only inches from their feet. What if a car managed to run off the road by a couple of inches? They would be either killed or injured smoking on this few inches of free space. Now I grew up and North Carolina and have lived here my entire life. If you are so addicted to tobacco that you want to quit and haven't, let me take you to a tobacco field in the middle of July and August. The leaves are covered with this icky black gum that sticks to everything it comes in contact with. Once in the field and your clothes, hair, and hands come in contact with this ick, even washed, the brown stain it leaves could take weeks to come off. Do you truly want that ick in your lungs? I have never smoked and yet I have asthma that is so severe that you would think I have COPD or something even worse. Yet I just had a CAT Scan of my lungs and I actually have restrictive air flow from so much scar tissue over years and years of second hand smoke first from my family, my father in particular and later on my husband and just about everyone I know smokes but me and Teri. All the teenagers and twenty's do it. And they don't realize what they are doing to themselves. I have begged several of them that actually have parents with pulmonary diseases worse than mine to please quit. But if you want to smoke fine. But respect the rest of us. Just because you are willing to risk your life for the sake of that after dinner cigarette doesn't mean the rest of us won't to be in the line of fire. And what the smoker said about the stains and smell from cigarettes hanging in the air are absolutely true. I have two grandchildren and both parents in the household smoke. While my husband and I don't, the people that lived in the house before us did. And when they pulled their pictures and the like off the walls, you could clearly see the imprint their pictures left on the walls from the yellowing. If I pull my pictures off right now and we have lived here nearly double the time the previous owners did, you won't see that yellow line outlining where our pictures were. When we painted in 1999 we shocked to see how yellow the textured ceiling was and ended up having to paint that as well. Chris got sick and the project was put on hold until a couple of years later and when one of the inmates that worked through the work release program at the town was released, he came back and finished the job for us. You couldn't tell the difference where Chris had stopped and Frank started. Also I have a huge collections of dolls that I have been saving for my granddaughter, daughter and a former foster child. I finally gave my granddaughter one of the dolls that came from Dollywood. Allyson's doll was done to match her coloring which is blue eyes and dark brown hair. Brianna, whose all of her dolls are still here, were done to match hers which is blonde hair and blue eyes. Brianna's dolls look just like they did when I bought them. Allyson's doll looks terrible. It is smelly, nasty looking, and in fact the entire house reeks of tobacco the second you hit the house. Even Allyson and Joshua's hair and clothes smell. And nothing you do short of stopping exposure to the cigarettes will remove it. Not to mention that Allyson is asthmatic like I am and she is constantly wheezing and coughing. I don't mean to come off sound preachy because that is not my intentions. I feel like that most people as I did don't realize that just minimal exposure to cigarettes can cause all kinds of problems to people that don't even smoke. You couple the exposure on a routine basis and sooner or later you may be affected as well as the actual smoker. So I think the bans are great. I grew up on tobacco farm and God only knows how much money my father actually made curing the stuff. But he died at the age of 49 from the tobacco abuse and the curing of the tobacco. If you don't believe me about the tobacco, go to a field now while they are harvesting and handle the stuff. You might be surprised what you find. Welcome to North Carolina.
