Red face Need suggestions for place to retire

We live on Long Island and have two grown children. (not living with us.). Although we love our house and Long Island, it's doubtful we can continue to live here indefinitely on a fixed income with the taxes and utility costs. Recently we visited The Villages in Florida and loved the whole concept. But, the condos in Spanish Springs that we really liked started in the mid-$400,ooo. Plus, we are not really sold on Florida. Can anybody give us first hand knowledge on a planned community that has lots of acitivities, that is not too expensive. low cirme and fairly convenient to shopping? We also visited Del Webb in Fl. but were not terribly impressed although I've heard other Del Webb communities are great. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
