Default Yearly car tax

OK I have read up on the yearly car tax, 3% of what your vehicle is assessed for. What I want to know, if you do not mind posting, can you tell me what you paid last year in car taxes and maybe just the year of your vehicle. What does it cost to register your vehicle? Do you get it inspected every year? I know that this is going to be the only expense that is going to surpass where I live in MD. I pay 180 every 2 years to register my vehicle, you only have to have your vehicle inspected once the entire time you have it and there are no yearly taxes on your vehicle. Thanks in advance for helping me not to be so confused. I have a 2006 SUV.

The personal property tax rate (including tagged and untagged motor vehicles) is not necessarily 3%. The tax rate is set by each individual county and municipality, if you choose to live within city limits.

Annual vehicle inspection is around $30 or less depending on the county of residence. Some do emission inspection in addition to safety, while others do not.

Annual license plate fee - $28 for most folks.

Highway Use Tax (HUT) - All transactions involving a vehicle titled out of state 90 days prior to registering in North Carolina will be taxed on vehicle value, with a maximum of $150.00 being assessed.

If owned less than 90 days before applying for North Carolina Title, tax credit against the highway use tax due will be allowed for the amount of tax paid to the other state upon submission of proof of payment. If the vehicle was titled in North Carolina after 90 days of purchase from a dealer, no credit would be allowed. Full highway use tax would be due on the purchase price, less any trade-in credit.

My husband has a toyota tacoma, 2002; I had a VW Passat wagon, 2004. we both originally were paying around 230-250/year(each) in taxes; it was down to prob $150 (each) last year.
Inspection every year, and now mandatory emissions testing. The inspection used to be really cheap ($10), I believe it went up last year. Not sure of emissions test charges, we just moved before it took effect in our county.
Yuck!

In my county with a tax rate of 0.515 per $100:

2006 vehicle tax bill on a 2005 Ford Escape XLT 4WD valued at $19,490 - $100.37

Note: Some counties have higher or lower tax rates than mine. Also, some counties have an additional local vehicle tax fee(s). Mine does not.

So your county tax rate factors into the equation? We are looking at a tax rate of around .85. I purchased my vehicle for 22K, however it is worth about 29 K, I got a good deal on it. So is NC gonna charge me the 22 or the 29?

Property is a local tax, not a state tax.

The property value of your vehicle will be determined by your local county tax office based on published used auto price guides as of January 1 of each year.

Any tax deductions or credits for a Toyota Prius? We already are paying roughly $3/gal. in little South Carolina. In California, it is already close to $5, if not $5/gal.

For some states, tags, taxes, and license plates have to be paid at the time of the purchase, which totals roughly $300 and is due at time of purchase. How exactly does it work for them, when they will be moving with temporary plates on their car (less than 2 months from the date of purchase)?

Thanks,
mshs2
