The average class size here in Wake County is 24-28 or so for the younger grades. Usually there are 2 teachers for K-2, but by 3rd grade they are down to 1 teacher.

However overcrowding has more to do with the number of kids per school rather than per class. Most of the elementary schools in Wake County have about 1000 kids per school (or more), with many in trailers adjacent to the main school building.

I'm in Wake county. 38 is definitely an extreme and most classes aren't that big.... but 17 is absolutely ridiculous. They must mean faculty ratio of 17:1.

My son's class has always averaged around 15 kids. (He'll be in 3rd grade this year.) I thought that was on the small side. There are no trailers at the school and only the Kindergarten classes have assistants.

I don't remember how many kids were in my class in elementary school, but in middle school and high school (Virginia & Ohio) we had about 20-30 students per classroom. I figured that was about average, not overcrowded. But I reckon it depends on the size of the class/building.

I just checked how many kids in the 1 school I checked in NJ, 903 students from 1-5 grade. Average class size 24 + or - 38 kids in a class is really overcrowded How the teacher's remember everyones name, I'll never know.
