well, that must be it then. My son just got approved for his. Guess his employer was decent about replying and saying that he was eligible anyway.

Chicago-how long did your son end up waiting?

I am on week 8 :-(

Spoke to unemployment last week. My employer never sent back the form so supposedly I should be approved. I was told it was running 5-6 but now is running 8-9. :-(

Did you receive any severance? Cause that sets you back, too, as far as getting your checks.

Just a week which I don't factor in my wait period.

And reading that everyone else got theirs so quickly is really stressing me out now. :-(

I really don't know what to do. You can't call the number because it is always busy. I am afraid to go to the office again just to wait for 2 hours to hear them say I have to keep waiting.

Could someone please clarify how getting severance impacts your wait period?

DH is getting a severance of X000. Does he estimate how much that would translate into his weekly pay? Does he wait for that to "run out" before applying, or can he apply now?

How would he know if his former employer filed anything on his behalf?

Thanks. I'm highly confused.

My understanding is that severance affects your waiting period - it is a temporary disqualification, you might say, b/c the commission sees it as an extension of salary. The compensation benefits are to kick in after a waiting period wh/ is affected by a certain level of severance, but I am not sure what that is - the guidelines. I will see what I can find out and post it.

It is very confusing and nuances of the rules vary from state to state. I will see what I can find unless someone else posts the info for you.

Hang in there - the paperwork and waiting periods can be very frustrating but once you do get into the system, things pretty much run on clockwork after that.

He needs to apply ASAP. The ESC decides based on a variety of factors when his employment benefits will begin after his severance. The longer you wait the longer it takes to receive the money. A form is sent to the employer after the claim is filed.

Also keep a check on your application. I know of people that thought their claim was fine and didn't hear anything for awhile/thought it was processing. After some time they went in to find out there were problems with the claim and it set them back weeks.

Thanks, ani. I find the unemployment Web site confusing - at least, I couldn't find the answers to our specific questions. Maybe once you get "in the system" it gets easier.

DH called the unemployment office last week. After being on hold for 2+ hours, the first thing the rep asked him was "are you receiving any severance?" When he said yes, the rep said something to the effect of - call us when that runs out - and hung up on him.

A disappointing experience, to say the least.
