I'd advise against going to physical locations to take care of unemployment paperwork.

Go here and do it all online: Apply for UI Benefits

I believe the max weekly payout (depending on your previous salary, of course) is around $550 or so.

if you received severance pay you will have to wait until that is 'used up' before you will begin receiving UI payments. so if you got 3 months severance, it will be 3 months before you can start collecting. but you do need to go ahead and apply now.

Yes, it's excellent advice to do it all online.

Then once you are set up, call every Sunday evening and follow the simple instructions.

Keep track of where you apply in case you get audited; I think you need to apply for at least two jobs a week. That's always done online, too, so just write the date, job you applied for, and the company.

It is SO easy to collect unemployment. (I'm not now, but I did a while back.)

You can do your weekly status confirmation online, and have the money direct deposited, so it's pretty easy, once it's set up.

I was laid of in May 2009, I filed for UI April 2010 and could have Feb 2010 after severance period was over, but didn't as I have never needed it before. I rec'd UI, but out of the 4 tiers available, I only rec'd half of the number of weeks available each time. I asked at least 4-5 times from different members of the NCESC staff, why I was only getting half of the weeks, as I had worked for the past 35 years. No one ever gave me an answer. Finally in Feb 2011, I talked to a lady at NCESC who told me that the law making you wait to file for UI after your severance period was up, was repealed in NC on Oct 09, so I could have filed earlier. She put in an appeal for me called "antidating" and said it would take 4-6 weeks for approval. Since my UI was set to end in April of 2011, I was hopeful that it would be approved and I would receive extra money.
During one of the many calls I made to check on this situation, I talked with a woman in the Raleigh office of NCESU, who told me that this was not what I should be doing. She actually answered my question that I had been asking for over a year. She said that I should have asked to have my severance pay “Prorated” over the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2009. That the reason I only received HALF of the weeks, was because I only showed that I was paid in 1st and 2nd quarters of 2009, therefore, I only received half of the weeks of UI, instead of all of the weeks. She put in for a prorating appeal on June 20th, which was then denied, as you are supposed to do this within a year of receiving the UI. I am so frustrated, as how am I supposed to put in for this if I don’t even know that it exists or that it is the reason why I was not receiving the entire amount that I should be receiving for each tier. I then RE-appealed this decision, I received a packet in the mail on July 15th that my information had been sent to the legal dept of NCESC. Am waiting on the hearing...what do I need to do to prepare in order to win this appeal, as I truly would have asked to have severance prorated and I would have received the correct amount of weeks in each tier and would not be about to lose everything now?

Appeal hearing

My former employer did not show for the appeal's hearing and never contacted ESC. We waited 15 minutes and then the adjudicator called back again but still no response. Can this help me in my appeal?

Today while doing my weekly certification I was asked 3 more questions that I have never seen before. Did anyone else have anything different on their certification?
