Talking Need some info about Robeson County!!

Hello everyone-

I'm currently job hunting and my search has led me to a company in Maxton, NC. However, I am from Massachusetts and have limited experience with North Carolina. I was hoping to solicit some advice from you all about where the best places to live are in this area. Ideally, I would like to keep the commute to work under 30 minutes. I am in my mid-twenties so am also interested in staying away from the areas which the median age is 70. I'd appreciate any input you may have to offer. I'm looking for a 'safe' area with more than nothing to do locally. Towns that have come up in my search are Laurinburg, Lumberton, etc. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

here's a thread that might be of some help to you....a lot of it talks about schools as the OP was interested in that but read on and there's a lot to see.

From the looks of it, 30 min from Maxton still puts you as a 20-something more of less in the middle of nowhere. Can you commute farther? Even Hope Mills, no great shakes, and Fayetteville have more to DO than other areas but will be at least 40 min away (Hope mills and S. Fayetteville)

hello, the first thing to realize is that moving from the north, it is a major culture shock, so be prepared, I moved 2 yrs ago from Long Island,ny.

Robeson county is one of the poorest counties, lumberton has the best school district in the county and it lacks compared to ny schools(lots of money compared to little money)

A litle further up I95 is Fayetteville is has everything.

Good luck on your search

Unfortunately, this would not be on my list of great places to move to in North Carolina. It is a very poor county with other problems. Are you sure you can't go elsewhere?

I have to agree with the other posters regarding Robeson County - Lumberton. I grew up in the area and still have family in northern SC so I visit often.

I was shocked the last time I visited the area. It is very depressed and the crime is high. I would definitely look in a different location if possible - especially if you have kids or are interested in property appreciation. Hope Mills is very close. We drove through there last summer, but don't know the area that well. Perhaps a local can help you.

Hope Mills TONS better, better schools, close to many other things to do, (not tons, mind you, but more than Robeson Cty!)

there's another thread here onHope Mills, http://www.city-data.com/forum/north...-mills-nc.html

Speaking as a transplant from Cleveland to the Maxton area (Laurinburg), I can’t emphasize enough that you really need to visit. Based on where you are from the culture shock will be large. I’m not talking about saying ya’ll and eating “fat back”, I’m talking about the economic state of these areas with all the trappings. If you’re looking in Maxton my guess is that its Campbell’s Soup that you’re looking at as it is about the only thing there. Within drivable commuting distance I would consider Hope Mills or Fayetteville. There is at least more shopping available. I cannot speak for the quality of health care there (other than it’s a larger town with more choices).

Any of the nearby towns (Laurinburg, Lumberton, Southern Pines, Hope Mills, Rockingham) are going to be a huge culture shock for you in all areas. These towns are rural to very rural. Most (not all) are depressed or depressing depending on your point of view.

Like others have mentioned, you really need to visit first, and for more than a few days if possible.

Stay away from Maxton. This place is often referred to as Lil Havannah or Lil Miami due to the drug problem. It is like a 3rd world country. Crackheads walk the roads around the clock trying to earn a dollar if you know what I mean. This are working girls. Some are even men. Drugs, abuse, you know name it. Extremely uneducated people. There are a few good people here but they should be moved and Maxton should be removed from the map!
