I plan on making a road trip from New Jersey thru both NC and SC and end at Savannah Georgia. Then come back but take a detour thru Virginia .. blue ridge mountains .. etc ..
-----
Just want to know if there are areas I should avoid due to crime in NC.
For example, if you were traveling thru NJ and asked me that question, I would say: Stay clear of Elizabeth NJ, Irvington NJ, East Orange NJ, and most of Newark NJ.
It's impossible to answer that at the state level. Every individual city has its bad areas, but it's not as if there are particular whole cities that are crime-ridden. Remember that NJ is the most urban state in the US; NC is mostly rural with urban swatches.
Avoid Southeast Raleigh and Southeast Durham; Fayetteville and Jacksonville are big military towns so you'll find a lot of the "typical military businesses" (tattoo parlors, strip joints etc) in those places, but certainly it's not as if the whole city/town is like that. Maybe if you tell us what cities you're planning to pass through, we can tell you where the rougher parts of town, for each, are.
The city you are heading to, Savannah, has a higher murder rate than just about any city in North Carolina. If you are not worried about that, which I wouldn't, then you probably shouldn't worry too much about the route you take through this state.
Traveling I-95, going through Fayetteville, you won't be "in" town, unless you drive about 3 miles. Stopping "in" Fayetteville consists of Exit 49 with some hotels & restaurants in the Cedar Creek community. Very safe & tame.

Please don't take this as a knock against Savannah (I absolutely LOVE Savannah), I was just putting it in perspective.
