We were living in Mayodan (for a very brief time) in 1997/1998 when a tornado cut a swath through Rockingham County and virtually wiped out downtown Stoneville. We were lucky enough to have been out of town that weekend, but surveying the aftermath was eye-opening. Very scary stuff.

There was a tornado a year or two later that tore through a section of Clemmons, outside of Winston-Salem. For several years, you could still see a path of broken trees from I-40.

During the coverage of these recent storms, I heard something I didn't know...NC has more overnight tornadoes than any other state! Not a comforting thought, for sure.

It never has been I can think of plenty of Sleepless nights
and if you live in the Piedmont you cant see it coming ahead of time
in the daylight
due to the hills & trees

I thought everyone knew NC had tornadoes.

Every time there is one, the national news media documents the toothless North Carolinian saying, "It sounded like a freight train!"

I was here for Hurricane Fran, and sure enough, the resulting tornado sounded like a freight train.

Y'ain't a real North Carolinian 'til ya hear the freight train.

You would think they would and know North Carolina is
also one of the top 5 states for lightening death too
Reason I did as a Warning As we have many prior threads

LOL! Only hit unpopulated areas? That's the funniest thing I've ever heard. Yes, the Great Tornado King looks down and says, "There's a nice rural area with a few mobile homes! Score!"

There was also a big one in the Clinton area in March of 1984. March and November are the months to most worry about (change of weather patterns).
