I live in Ashe County, NC (northwest corner of NC) and was wondering how close to my property line can I build? I am wanting to build a carport on the side of my house, and it is going to come close to the dividing line between my land and the neighbors.

You need to check with the Zoning Office in Ashe County. Different counties have different guidelines.
