Vacation in mountains
we are visiting some friends in lynchburg va and are going drive into NC to see about possibly relocating from NJ. While in North Carolina we would like to stop and see Grandfather Mountain. What part of NC Is it in the Mountains. we are trying to find a place to stay while there.
thank you

We just visited Grandfather Mountain last week. It was absolutely beautiful with the most stunning views. Be prepared for lots of 'oohs' and 'aahs' as you drive up to the top!
It is quite close to Boone, but we stayed two nights in the Mast Farm Inn in Valle Crucis. It's a very quaint old guest house which I would highly recommend to anyone looking for old fashioned charm and comfort. They use organic produce and the food served often looks like a work of art- but it tastes good as well!
I can't wait for the opportunity to return

If you want the best retirement weather east of California look at the foothills area from Marion to Wilkesboro. We live in Lenoir. We get little or no snow but are within an hour's drive of ski slopes.

Grandfather Mountain is great. If you have the time, be sure to hike the Grandfather Trail. It leaves from the back of the parking area by the picnic tables. It is a little strenuous with some ropes and ladders but the views are incredible. It's not too long, I think about 1-2 miles each way.
Also, don't miss the Linville Gorge - the Grand Canyon of North Carolina. It is close by and gorgeous with some easy hikes - unless you want to hike down into the gorge - I think that one requires a permit.
We rented a cabin and stayed in Boone, but the previous poster's suggestion of Valle Crusis sounds awesome - it is a picturesque, storybook looking place.
Have fun..I'm jealous!
