Erie, Pa.-based Plastek Industries plans to open a plant near Hamlet and hire 250 within three years. If the plastics-packaging company meets and maintains hiring and other goals, it could receive $2.25 million in state incentives.

Was so glad to read this! That area was hard hit with layoffs this past year and the people there are in dire straits. Hope it pans out as planned. In fact, land is super cheap in that area and I wish other industries would opt for building there.

Our loss is your gain. Plastek has a staff of about 1000 locally, about 200 jobs is a tough loss. My understanding is the company will offer the jobs in Hamlet to current employees willing to make the move - and offer them an incentive to make that move. This is the division of the company that makes containers for deodorant products and shipping costs are currently driving them out of the market. They hope to replace the lost manufacturing capacity with additional orders for the other products they now make here. They are a good company.
