My husband is heading out there in September. He is hoping to get an oilfield job. All the guys he worked with out here are saying not to bother wait until next summer, everything shuts down for winter. Just bear minimum runs. Is her wasting his time coming out in September? He has his CDL and is getting tanker before he leaves. I am just scared this is a big thing for our family. We live in Michigan. I am thinking his old co workers are just jealous.

Some workers are seasonal and just up and quit because they can't take the winters here. Others work year-round. If you can somehow get your hands on it this would be a great read for background on the oil boom-- a group of newspapers in ND (Dickinson, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Jamestown at least) have pooled reporters and are publishing a series of special articles on the oil industry. They're keeping it as a print exclusive at the moment, but it's pretty comprehensive. The big recommendation it seems is to line up employment w/ an oil service company before you head to Williston/Stanley/Tioga. The oil companies can help you get a line on housing--even if it's just a room in a "man camp." The money is big, but some of the living conditions and hours are tough.

I have one friend who works with Halliburton, and during the harshest part of the winter, they will scale back to about 30 hour weeks. But that only last for about a month or two and then back to full swing. Before he leaves, he shoud ensure he has a job and a place to stay. My friend was lucky enough to find a small apartment but his family lives in Minot. He has 2 weeks on and 1 week off, which he drives to Minot.

He just don't want to head out there to work a few weeks than be done until April /May. He doesn't like winters but we live in Michigan and have some harsh all though less wind, winters. He is out of unemployment in November. Even if they extend it more he is tired of it and if there is work he is willing to go and do what ever he needs to feel like a productive human being again. We are going to be getting a cell phone for him to take out there and then he is going to apply to jobs out there. We just want to use a cell phone that he will have on him out there.

I hear housing is one of the biggest problems out there -- and he certainly wouldn't want to try to be sleeping in his truck through the winter. I don't think a camper or motorhome would do well withstanding the winters, so please make sure he has a place to stay before jumping into a full commitment.

The newspapers have now compiled the series on the oil boom: www.runningwithoil.com. It's worth a look.
