Well we have had the 2010 census since then. What are the 2010 figures for the county? We should have 2014/15 projections by now, not 2009 projections.

The main reason is the overall decline of agriculture. Ever read Of Mice and Men? It took a lot of farm hands to run a farm or ranch back in the day. Ever see the original Wizard of Oz? Do you remember how many hands were floating around the ranch?

North Dakota's population peaked in the 1930's at 680,000 and only again surpassed that peak in the 2010's (after 80 years of decline or stagnation) because of the oil boom. The state is booming so much right now that it's pushing the 720k's.

And when (not if) that busts you can expect the permanent population to fall back under those peaks again, and quickly.
