It's that time of year that we're going to encounter closed roads, closed schools, warm fireplaces and hot toddy's.

If you see or hear of a weather alert, road closure, etc... please post it here. If it's a weather alert, it doesn't have to be posted word for word. Simply noting the county or area and what's going to happen is enough to let others know.

This thread serves two purposes. First, it let's folks know what they might encounter during travel. Secondly, it gives new folks a chance to read through and see how bad a winter is in North Dakota.

One other thing. Weather can change at any minute in the Northern States as many of you know. This thread is not the know all of what's going on. It's only as good as we make it.

national weather service bismarck nd
225 pm cst thu nov 18 2010

...snow and blowing snow this afternoon and early evening north
central...

.snowfall thursday...combined with gusty southerly winds of 20 to
35 mph...has resulted in blowing snow with visibilities as low as
one quarter mile at times across the far north central. The worst
conditions are located mainly along the canadian border counties
of bottineau...rolette...and renville along highway 5. Further
additional snow amounts up to one inch are possible through early
this evening...with total snowfall through mid evening of 1 to 3
inches. The blowing snow will continue through the middle evening
then diminish as winds begin to fall.

Temperatures across the far northwest are now generally at or
above freezing. Much of the precipitation is moving north and east
of the area...so the freezing rain advisory has been cancelled for
the far northwest.

Default Wind Chill, what is it?

What is Wind Chill?
It is the temperature it "Feels like" outside and is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by the effects of wind and cold. As the wind increases, the body is cooled at a faster rate causing the skin temperature to drop. Wind Chill does not impact inanimate objects like car radiators and exposed water pipes, because these objects cannot cool below actual air temperature.

What is Frostbite?
Frostbite is an injury to the body caused by freezing body tissue. The most susceptible parts of the body are the extremities such as fingers, toes, ear lobes, or the tip of the nose. Symptoms include loss of feeling in the extremity and a white or pale appearance. Medical attentions is needed immediately for frostbite. The area should be SLOWLY re-warmed.

What is Hypothermia?
Hypothermia is abnormally low body temperature (below 95 degrees Fahrenheit). Warning signs include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and apparent exhaustion. Medical attention is needed immediately. If it is not available, begin warming the body SLOWLY.

Tips on how to dress during cold weather.
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Trapped air between the layers will insulate you. Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded.
- Wear a hat, because 40% of your body heat can be lost from your head.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
- Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
- Try to stay dry and out of the wind.

Thanks Elk Hunter for the wind chill info....

As a weather forecaster wind chill is often the most underrated thing in the winter. It may be interesting to note that in 2001 the wind chill formula was changed...

GOLDEN GATE WEATHER SERVICES- Wind Chill, New and Old

So the -70 or -80 wind chills of the past will not occur anymore.... -70F wind chill in 1995 would be about -45F today.... so just keep that in mind when someone says I remember way back when when the wind chill was such and such..

Forecast-wise this weekend it does look like a 3 to 5 inch snow event for much of North Dakota....highest centered from west central through central into northeast North Dakota. 1 or 2 inches possible in the far southeast part of the state....south of Jamestown-Fargo line.

Wind not a big deal so blowing will not be a big issue. Will get colder next week with more widespread negative values at night.

Having been born and raised on a farm in Eastern South Dakota and then working ranches most of my life, wind chill has always been important with livestock. Not as bad as humans, but a concern.

Now that I live in Wyoming, we actually tell our weather from our critters.

For instance, I put the dog out in the morning and I wait three minutes. If I have to bust him loose from the tree, I know it's cold.

this hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north central
north dakota...northwest north dakota...south central north
dakota and southeast north dakota.

.day one...today and tonight

a winter weather advisory continues through noon cst sunday. Light
snow will continue sunday morning but diminish by noon. An
additional one inch of snow is possible during this time. For
further information...please visit the bismarck national weather
service homepage at

NWS Bismarck, ND Home Page

.days two through seven...monday through saturday

light snow will develop over most of northern and central north
dakota monday. Snowfall accumulations of up to 2 inches are
possible in this area by monday night.

there is growing concern that a major winter storm could develop late
tuesday night and continue into thanksgiving morning. The latest
forecast models are in good agreement that heavy snow is possible
beginning tuesday evening in western north dakota...then spreading
across the rest of central north dakota tuesday night. The heavy
snow could result in several inches of snowfall through wednesday
night. In addition...strong northwest winds are forecast to develop
wednesday night into thanksgiving day morning with possible blizzard
like conditions.

The heavy snow potential tuesday night through wednesday night and
possible blizzard conditions thursday morning could significantly
hamper holiday travel. We will continue to monitor this potentially
significant winter storm. Please check back for frequent updates.
