We just found out that we are heading to Grand Forks as well. Report date is January 2013. Im not good with the cold and our triplets have only seen snow once (that was more then a dusting). Going to stock up on footie pajamas for myself and the kids

Keep your dog in the house most days, and over night. Outside for potty breaks, and play time. I had a boxer for 16+ years. They love snow. You will see, just do the normal walks etc when weather is manageable, Petco, (near mall on 32nd Street) for outings when it is not. We have a good dog park, Lincoln Park area 13th and Belmont Rd. I believe it is open into the fall, and then again in Spring. The base is about 20 miles out from Grand Forks. From the base on Hwy 2....take the I29 off ramp south, near the Big Sioux Truck Stop. That will take you to 32nd Ave....all the main box stores, mall, Sam's club, etc are along 32nd. Welcome to Grand Forks, hope you like it.

Congrats and welcome to the area. If not used to the cold, Jan could be a tough time to move. Last winter was quite mild (compared to usual).... I am a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Forks and the very early indications are could have another not normal winter....a bit warmer than usual.... But depends on where you are from and used to....our warmer winter may still be quite cold for you.
But in most years....snowcover is present from Thanskgiving to mid March....and temps below zero at night are fairly common in Dec-Feb.... though very very low temps (below -25F) are not as common, but some winters may see a few outbreaks of that type of cold. Wind is an issue most of the time, so wind chills can be quite cold. We have 3 boys....two 3 yrs and 7 yrs old.... and when they were babies...if they go out just bundled them up and got one of those covers for the baby carrier with lots of blankets and it was fine. The amount of time outside in real cold weather will not be great. I do advise dont go overboard shopping for coats, etc until you arrive and get advice of locals. Often people over buy and never use half the stuff....or if they are in a warm climate buy something there that isnt made for our northern winters.
Let me know if I can assist you in answering questions. I am not in the military so AFB issues and housing on the base I know little about...but in town I am pretty knowledgeable.
Dan

Now all a sudden, hubby thinke he needs a four wheel drive truck (we have a Dodge Ram 1500 but just 2 wheel drive LOL) and I have a lil Mazda 3 that he is thinking of selling to get me a better car for winter driving.
So, any advice on cars and such. Are 4x4's or all wheel drives needed or better for driving up there?? I am sure that my car would be fine but would a AWD be more realistic?
And can someone tell me why there are NO pictures of the new base housing on line or on the GFAFB website?? Are they secret squirrel crap?? The AF portal only had 1 pix and then the floor plan!!! I need visuals people! Help a sista out will ya?

Your Hubby is right, two wheel drive won't cut it. Sell it down there. Lil cars, front wheel drive do great on snow and in town driving. I wouldn't go getting a truck yet, might be better prices up here...plus why register it twice. Google the base housing, there are all sort of pics.
