Some examples- flooding? Jobs, dsl, just about any info would be nice.

I was thinking of Mott a while back, but the house there was like 3 bocks from the Cannonball River.

Thanks!

Unless you are planning to retire or farm, you won't find much in Wildrose. They no longer have a school, but still have a small grocery store, cafe, and gas station. It is in Williams countly, ND...NE of Williston, but closer to Crosby, ND. Williston has approx 15,000-18,000 (with current oil boom)...Crosby has around 1,000 people. Mostly farmers and retired farmers living in the small town. You can check it out on wikipedia Wildrose, North Dakota - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia or the Williams county link Williams County - Area Links

Hello!

Thank you very much for replying.

I kind of figured that it was sort of in the middle of nowhere so to speak. But, just as long as there are cities close by (16 to 20 miles, etc.) then that should be fine.

As far as job wise, I'd be willing to take anything. I'm an artist (3D art and animation) so I'd also be working on contract basis, so dsl is a must! I've yet to find out if dsl is actually a choice in Wildrose though.

What I'm actually looking for is a peaceful city with lots of nature and zero crime (or close to it).

I'd be moving from San Francisco, CA. I've heard of the cold winters there, and that is no problem for me.

Thanks again!

Michael.

You know Haunting, you might want to check into Medora. It is a tourist town and very busy in the summer, but quiets down to just the locals in the fall-winter-spring months. It is smack in the middle of the ND badlands in western ND, next to Theodore Roosevelt Ntl. park. Easy access to Interstate 94...not too far from Dickinson (16,000 people) around 24-30 miles... or Bismarck-Mandan (100,000) little over 100 miles. It has gift shops, resturaunts, etc...

Hello again!

Medora does sound nice. I've been unable to find any homes for sale there though. I did manage to locate the city web site, but there was zero mention of real estate information on their pages.

Thanks again.

As far as crime, you may have maybe one homicide in Bismarck in a year. Any place in ND is safe. Minot may have had a few in the last year. but still is a place I would walk anywhere at night alone.

Just wanted to make one point. Statisticly speaking, North Dakota is the safest place in the USA. Please don't spread that around! I'm moving back to
NoDak next summer, God willing.
I guess I've always known what a great place it is. But sometimes you need to live other places to understand what you left...
Love them wide open spaces!!

Hi!

I read somewhere that North Dakota was like one of the safest if not the safest place in the country. Glad to hear it confirmed!

Good luck on your move back to North Dakota! It certianly seems like a lost other world so to speak. I just wish that I had decided to move there years earlier.

Hm, I suppose a 4x4 is a good choice in North Dakota. One thing that I have noticed is a lack of Land Rover dealers/service centers in North Dakota. Are there any places that can service them? I've been trying to look it up via Google, but thus far have had zero luck.

Billings, Montana, and Minneapolis appear to have the nearest dealers. There's no BMW dealers either.

There's also not a Whole Foods Market, Jamba Juice, Chipotle, IKEA, Costco, Crate & Barrel, etc etc etc in the whole state. ND is not a consumers' paradise, like the Bay Area.

Hi
I live outside of Wildrose, North Dakota. It's nice and quiet here. We are quite isolated here, tho'. We lost our store and our cafe this summer--we're down to the gas station, the senior citizen's, and the Post Office(and maybe a bar). However, the job situation is looking pretty good, I've heard. Northwest ND has a mini-oil boom(it starts about 30 miles south or about 50 miles west) and if you can drive a truck or work oilfield and want to work 6.5 days a week outside in the coming winter, you've got it made. Bit of a commute but the money is fantastic! MAPS in Ray(19 miles south) is a call center looking for help sometimes.
No worries about flooding--we're in a drought.
DSL--I don't really know. NCC Ray is the provider.
Lots of nature and zero crime--well, we shot a porky pine last week. The barnswallows are starting to flock. The mice are starting to move into the house. And the three-legged dog around town has been penned up. That's about it.
The crime rate isn't all that bad. We had an isolated shoot out up the road a couple of Christmas' ago where the troopers or the police shot a despondent man after a hostage situation(some rumor, but based on some fact, somewhere), a meth problem, an underage alcohol problem, our local canadian drug runner who used to come by must have found a different route cause he doesn't come by anymore, and the locals are freaking about the Mexican work crews living in the windrows.
We have 5 vehicles that run and we don't have a 4x4. Probably should have one, but front wheel drive works better here for us.
Now, I'll fess up. I'm being a trifle nasty here. I should wax poetically about how great Wildrose is and give you the hard sell. But we all know how lucky my young family is to be here where things are exactly how everyone projects them to be--it is great, quiet, safe-ish place. Beautiful in it's own way, the people are nice, and it's a fine place to live. And I am lucky enough not to have lived in SF or anywhere else the past few years. BUT, we are far away from anything, and everything is complicated by the isolation. The cheap price of living here doesn't necessarily make a life worth living. And let me tell you, it ain't really so cheap. Look somewhere closer to something.
