Looking at moving to Bismarck area. Comparing Bismarck schools and housing to Mandan. I've been focusing Bismarck search in Northwest area (Century HS, Horizon Middle, Centennial Elem). I am coming from a HS with 4 yr program (9 - 12 grade), fair AP programs and top notch marching band. I see Bismarck schools have 10 - 12 and no marching band but looks like good AP/Honors programs. Mandan has 9 - 12 and marching band but no AP courses. (they said they do concurrent courses with Bismarck college.) Does anyone have any input about these schools? How are the music programs in these schools overall and are the AP courses listed regularly offered and strong courses? I was surprised to see that Bismarck high schools only rate 5 and 4 (Century and Bismarck respectively) on Great Schools and Mandan a 4. I've always heard Bismarck area schools were fabulous. What is causing the low rating? Any advise would be helpful.

I would not put much faith in Great Schools. Their ratings of schools are based on reviews from parents and students and not any real rankings based on test scores and such.
I hope you find this website helpful http://www.bismarckschools.org
I think perhaps the Bismarck/Mandan Chamber of Commerce might be helpful also. Yes, they are primarily focused on business but they have access to better info due to the fact if a company wanted to relocate employees the chamber would certainly be asked questions about area schools.
I too am thinking about moving to N.D. and have found that as far as education questions go on this forum it is best to try and find answers on your own. I lived in Minot 20 years ago and I always like Bismarck. The people were extremely friendly. Good luck in your search.

I graduated from Mandan high school in 2001. When I went to school there, we had two AP classes (English and History), plus Advanced Chemistry, which was pretty much an AP class. I took those classes and they where definitely challenging. We also had quite the marching band, too. They were supposed to go to Ireland one year and play in some St. Patrick's Day parade there, but there was some hoopla and they ended up not going. At any rate, they were good. I think my education was great, and it definitely prepared me for college well. That being said, I can't compare it to Century or BHS, since I never attended those schools. The only thing is that Mandan doesn't have much. There are a few restaurants, a couple of grocery stores, and some specialty shops downtown, but for everything else you need to go to Bismarck. It's not that far anyway, but it is something to think about.
