That is total B.S. They are simply gouging the renters and taking advantage of them because of the jobs boom. Isn't there rent control laws in ND that prevent that sort of thing? I believe in karma.

-Cheers.

Actually, there is a law in ND (thanks to Tate Cymbauluk pointing this out since I couldn't find it until he did... and that was sarcasm, I'm not a big Tate fan) stating that it is illegal for the city, county, or state gov't to interfere in housing prices.

It's a horrible law and needs to be changed ASAP. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening.

I read this in todays on-line Herald as well.

Absolutely ridiculous!! I guess I can't blame this family for raising their rent. Why should they be the only ones in town with low rents! At least they were "somewhat" honest when she said "everyone else is, so why not us"...but I didn't like the EXCUSE ... cost to maintain and upkeep is more expensive now, etc... they have owned these apartments for 10 years, so doubt the expenses are that much more. It is not like they BUILT a brand new apartment building, or bought it when the boom was on. I'm guessing 10 years ago, they got a pretty good price for those apartments...I really doubt they were needing to sale these apartments to keep up with inflation. My mom owns her nice home up in WIlliston, and her taxes and upkeep are no more than they were before the boom. Just excuses by these apartment owners.

Unforetunately, it is sad for the renter. Not sad for the landlord.

Neither you or I could really say what we would do, if we were landlords. I like to entertain the idea that I wouldn't take advantage, but then again, who am I kidding.

Lisan23 is right in that in a case like a boom, it would be better to have GOV step in. I don't like GOV intervention anymore then anybody else, but sometimes it's warranted.

When God wishes to punish you, he answers your prayers!

Too many people, over the years, on their knees in church, praying for an economic boom to your region? And who were the ones praying most fervently!!

And let's pray there's no anti-development, Minneapolis-styled Nimby's there to frustrate any new developers to expand the supply of housing!

Not mine thank God!!! However, I actually heard this from my friend that got a text as we were on the road for a job. I was driving, lol, not her! I read it in the Herald when I got home and was just so disheartened for the seniors living there and everyone else. I am sure the hardworking people in the oil field don't feel like throwing away the majority of their hard earned paycheck for a run down apartment building. Really, that is a good payment on a new house or kept up older house.

The sad part of it all is that no one wants to pay that in oilfield or not, but people have to live somewhere! The owner will still get it rented out, unless everyone banded together and tells them to go shove it somewhere.

Welcome to the wonderful world of gentrification. Of course, the landlords will probably start complaining after restaurant prices and charges for goods and services skyrocket.

The saddest part is that people don't hold other's feet to the fire. When the boom busts, and it will, there is going to be massive amounts of housing standing open and then the landlords are going to drop prices. People should refuse to do business with landlords that shook down people during the boom. Don't rent from them. Let them know that the reason their house is standing empty is because of what they did.

Unfortunately, it's not easy because people need houses now and there's nothing to stop these crooks.

I understand that during a boom, demand speaks. I fully understand prices go up to reflect that. But doubling or tripling grocery prices, 4 or 5 times normal rent, are rediculous A 25-30% increase wouldn't have been rediculous, it would have been sound business practice. But there is nothing sound about what they are doing.
