Let's think of some names and put up a forum poll. (It beats talking about Williston and oil field jobs for the 1000th time.)

UND Norsemen -- like Vikings, but the Vikings name has been taken by the Minnesota Vikings. It has good alliteration with UND.

UND Rangers

UND Ranchers

UND Ice Kickers

UND Avalanche

UND Blizzard

UND Oilers

I would vote for Norsemen, as it reflects on the area's Scandinavian roots. Still, this brings me back to my original point. How is the name based on a minority offensive, but a name based on the ethnic majority not? Personally I would love the "Fighting Whities".

I don't really see what's so horrible about it since the name isn't derogatory in any sort of a way. It seems like an honorable name to commemorate a culture. ("We were proud warriors,"--what's wrong with that?)
Not derogatory in any way? The term "sioux" translates, roughly, into "snake"- as in "snake in the grass, not to be trusted, treacherous, enemy" etc. in Ojibway. The Ojibway were traditional enemies of the people who refer to themselves as Lakota, Nakota, or Dakota. Europeans borrowed the term from the Ojibway and you now consider it "honorable". That is quite convenient (for you).
