Question Out of state CDL class A ........

Can i use my Illinois CDL class A with hazmat and tanker endorsements in North Dakota?

Or do I need to apply for a new one once i get there?

I will be sleeping in my tent or car. I wont have a ND address.

Thanks for replying.

Depends on who you work for. Some require their drivers to have an ND license. in that case, if you get a hazmat in IL, you will have to retake the hazmat test to get the "H" on your ND license. Other companies will just let you run with your illinois license (since that's probably where your permanent residence is)' The DOT around here really hasn't cracked down on that but I think the rule is that you have to obtain a license for the state you are working in "immediately". I know guys that have been driving up here for 5 years with a WY license and never been given any grief from their company or the DOT. I would get every endorsement you can in your home state and show up with H,N,T (hazmat, tanker, and doubles/triples) The N,T endorsements will transfer from one state to another but the H won't if you company requires you to change. Which I doubt they will.

Thank you very much Kychlo. The school here in Chicago is offering me to get each endorsement for 100 bucks a piece after I get my Full CDL class A. So that would be :

CDL = 1,800
H,N,T endorsment = 300

Grand total 2,100. not bad compared to a school in North Dakota charging 4,800 just for the CDL.

Thanks again.

The endorsement tests for tanker and doubles/triples cost $15 bucks or so in every state I've ever dealt with. The hazmat has an online application, fingerprints, and background check that costs $89.25. The hazmat endorsement test is also only $12-$15. Seems kinda steep at $300 when you could do it for $135 ish on your own.

The difference in the price of the class really shows a sign of the economy in Williston. Wow.

Well the charge of 100 per endorsment is because they gonna let me use the school's truck.

Unless they've changed things, the doubles/triples, tanker and hazmat endoresements are written tests only - no driving. At least that was the way it was back in Illinois when I took those tests.

You can keep your IL CDL for as long as you wish if your working on a rotation that is half time in ND and your off time is wherever (IL).

Technically if you're on a "Temporary Assignment" it's no big deal. However if you move to ND and take up residence then you have something like a month or two to get the license moved over to ND. I wouldn't sweat it until somebody tells you you must change it over, eg; employer or HiPo.

It's really the least of your worries at the moment with everything involved in getting yourseld to Williston and going to work. But absolutely something to keep in mind. Good Luck!
