Shouldn't have too much trouble filling those 50 union jobs considering 1,300 union workers are out of work at Crystal.

Not necessarily...most are still waiting it out. Some are doing part time work....I live in East Grand Forks MN and the workers in MN do receive unemployment assistance.

Crystal Sugar did hire temp workers using an agency in the Cities and would put them up in local hotels and bus them to the factories. Now they are advertising for workers, but they do specifiy in the ad that the job is not permanent and the previous workers no on lockout would be accepted back.

I wish I could talk the hubby into this! One of the guys I work with just quit to go work for his brother in Gwinner, he's buying a 4 bedroom house in decent condition for $89,000. SO much cheaper than Williston!!

But you'll still find a similar shortage of housing. That is a sparsely populated area. If 40 new families suddenly move in then it will likely exhausted the supply housing in the entire county. Still, if you can find a place then you could make a nice living there.

A friend of mine has worked there for about 22 years. He says that people live all over Southwest North Dakota and travel to work there. Wahpeton, Lisbon, Lidgerwood, and there is even a group that carpools from Fargo everyday. I believe that the people that had been laid off from the Bismarck plant were offered jobs in Gwinner. It didn't sound like that many took them up on the offer.

That's kinda what I've been trying to get across to people....there are good jobs all over the state. Sure, most will make you only 1/2 as much as in the oilfields, but your living expenses will be 2/3 - 3/4 less.

And housing in this 1/2 of the state is pretty reasonable for renting & also for buying, unless you want to buy in Fargo or Grand Forks areas.

People working at Bobcat live all over the SE 1/4 of the state. There's carpools from Valley City, Casselton & Fargo as well as from many smaller towns.

Yep! Unfortunately oil/natural gas is my husbands career choice but if we were starting all over again from the beginning I'd go to Gwinner in a heart beat over the western part of the state.

The guy I work with bought his home in one of the small towns around Gwinner, not in Gwinner. But still... $89,000 for a decent sized home is pretty sweet!

Don't know how legit the listing was, but I saw a listing in Forman for $14K. 3 bed, old house, needed some TLC but didn't look too bad.

Yeh, I was thinking for $89,000 it must have been maybe a little newer? Like 1940s or newer? Or really nice shape 1890-1930s?
