In N.D. low income housing is listed as "HUD" assistance, or just "low income" I suspect the "affordable" is just the typical advertising buzz word in this case.
And re: low income housing vouchers, they are supposedly good for anywhere in the state of N.D. A private home owner has to sign a contract for a period of time, I've seen 15, 25 yrs as examples, during that time the rent is subsidized by Govt. based housing programs, and rents remain reasonable. What happened w/ a few of the apartment buildings in Williston was their contracts had run the required time, so that is why they were now able to raise rents to these outlandish prices. Or in some cases sell their buildings to the highest bidder. The "recent" oil field boom has been going on for a few years there. Since 04, 05?? ( historically boom/bust since 50's)
The City has even had to subsidize their employees in some cases because of this rent situation. Now, for these folks making a reported $100,000 yr., 2500 mth rent is nothing, especially when sharing an apartment.
For a person still working there pre-boom job, or on a fixed income this is life changing as they cannot afford this rent at all. It is so sad. I think it is the "why" at least partially that we see places like McD's paying (latest rumor) 25.00 hr. Hopefully these promised houses will be built this spring, summer....some of this will start to settle down. Supply demand example of the free-market, hard as it is to fathom.

I have to disagree Jan. "Affordable Housing", at least in Dickinson, means low income qualified, elderly, developementaly disabled, Section 8 HUD or government subsidized. I called each and every one of the places listed in this link as "affordable" and they all told me this. These apartments are for the poor ND locals who were displaced to make room for oil workers. Single moms seem to be especially hardest hit in Dickinson. the link below shows apartments listed as Affordable. Anyone searching for a place to live in Dickinson should take these off your list as you are wasting your time.

It is based on your income, I talked to my friend that has applied there, but she was denied because she made 28,000 a year and the limit for a single person is 25,000. That is really too bad for her as she can't afford 1,500 to 2,000 a month for anything else around here. So I don't know guess it would be good for a single parent with kids I suppose.

Awesome link. Wish I had it on my trip to Dickinson as I wasted half a day calling/visiting these apartments. There are lots of income qualified new builds not yet listed on the link also.
