Why doesn't the university and athletic department just change the spelling of Sioux? Why not use Soo or Su? That way they can skirt around the issue of using a hostile or abusive nickname.

I still think the Fighting Caucasians or Fighting Norsemen would be the best. It will expose the NCAA for the hypocrites that they are.

Trying to explain to recruits parents, why the university athletic program is under NCAA sanctions, is going to be a tough sell. You can bet the competition will use that against them every chance it gets.

That is what really steams me. Wisconsin and Michigan are not doing this out of any sense of moral outrage. They're using it to harm a direct competitor who has bested them for years. In hockey the Sioux draw as well as some NHL teams, yet Minnesota is lucky if they get 6000 at the Mariucci Arena. College sports is a business, a big business. If you can harm a competitor in any way most of their programs wouldn't hesitate to do so in a second.

Minnesota is averaging around 9,500 or so in attendance, not 6,000.

Based on what numbers? Every Gopher home game is broadcast on FCS, and I usually catch part of most of them. They do announce the attendance, and the highest I've seen this year as the game against UND. That was only around 6500, with a good chunk of them Sioux fans. They've been below 6k several times. Maybe tickets sold is higher, but the actual butts in the seats is very low. The arena is half empty.

Coach Hasktol changes his tune
UND hockey's Hakstol says Sioux nickname law creates
Coach Hakstol changes his tune.... time to move this university forward. I too believe that UND used the Sioux nickname honorably and the Sioux people should be proud. But there come a time you got to know when to fold them. Just too much risk.
Only way to keep the nickname is to move down to NAIA level....as Div 2 is also a part of the NCAA. NCAA is a private organization....but the only game in town for any athletic department. So not like there's a choice. NCAA isnt going to change their tune....they could care less what the folks in ND vote. The agreement that was signed by all parties is past due by a few years and it was not fulfilled. Take pride in our history....but hanging onto something like this will surely cause more harm than good.
We already know that if UND would keep the name then several schools will not play us....UM, UW, Iowa, South Dakota St and likely others as well. But the big ? is the Big Sky conf. Hockey can survive, but other sports like football and basketball absolutely cannot survive being an independent. Whom can the schedule to get that many games in. So is it worth the risk? Once the Big Sky says no....not like we can all of a sudden vote again and plead to get in again soon. By that time, all would be lost.
Those Sioux supporters can be proud and wear the gear, but in the official capacity the university just cannot risk doing so. I do hope and pray that more and more will understand the consequences and better understand them.
This is not some bluff, it is the real deal.

I actually have to agree on this one. I think UND should keep fighting the NCAA, but they need to back off the nickname if there is an immediate threat to scheduling. I still wonder where all of this pressure is coming from. This was not an issue a few months ago, suddenly all of these universities came out of the woodwork on their moral high horse. My guess is that calls were made from the NCAA offices to the ADs of each of these schools. I can only hope and pray that a RICO charge lies waiting in the future for the NCAA.

The UND coach may want to stay neutral, if not he may find himself out of that position due to the passion and opinions on this subject.
The attendance numbers are based on conference stats and stats from uscho.com. In terms of counting attendance, the number that is counted is tickets sold, not the amount of people who use the tickets. If the ticket is sold, then the school has already made some money even if the person doesn't show. All paying sports do this, they always count tickets sold, even if the amount of people in the arena that night is lower than the sold total.
