Default Beulah, Hazen or anything near that area rentals?

My son received a 3 month internship this summer at a Power Plant near Beaulah but I just got off the phone with my son. He has only been able to find one available apartment for this summer in Beulah and he called to get my advice on it since its $700. for a one bedroom. Kind of costly for a kid fresh out of college but not sure where else to turn. He said he called every apartment he has found on the internet. I even suggested he use our camper or he can possibly purchase an older camper(on payments) a friend owns for cheaper then his summer rent, but he said that he is not able to find anywhere to park it. I am wondering is the oil affecting Beulah, Hazen( he has called there as well) and the other small towns in that area?

Monday my husband is going to call the local grain elevators and see if they have any suggestions and I e-mailed the chambers in both these towns. I am thinking I am soon to be an old lady and need another job or two before I get these two kids settled.

Any rental suggestions would be of great help. He has references, does not smoke or drink, he would rather spend his money on collecting vintage sleds- my garage is brimming!! We would also co-sign for him and do what we could to help him. Just not sure where to turn and no noone from that area, since we are stuck up here in the far north.

Thanks for any help.

Tammy

PS- Here I thought East Grand Forks was hard to find a place for my girl- SPOKE TOO SOON ON THAT!!! ha ha

That is an excellent internship to have received! Have you called the campgrounds around that area? There are several bays quite close to the Plant that he could park his camper and move every 14 days or whatever it is there. There is Beulah Bay and Hazen Bay where he might be able to find hookups for the summer. Hazen is roughly 12 or so miles east of the Plant, Zap is around 10 miles to the south. Beaver bay is up north from Zap. There is also a campground in Zap that could be checked out. I would say that the oil boom has affected that area as well, however, because of the Plant and other coal plants there, it has always been high to begin with.

I'm thinking Beulah and Hazen are being impacted somewhat from the over flow of the oil boom going on further west of these communities. Many of the workers (if not the majority) commute from Bismarck-Mandan areas. Many car pool together. Bismarck State has a Power Plant school, and the students do interships at the various plants in the Beulah-Hazen area. Is he up to driving an 1 or so each way? He might consider Bismarck or Mandan.

I agree w/ Roloff...Your Son should just keep whatever housing he is in now in Bismarck through his internship. I wouldn't want my son living in a camper all summer out in that area, unless the company owners allow him to park in the yard.

Here is a overlay of the Bakken oil field. You can expect people driving 1+ hours to get to work. So draw a line 80 miles outside this overlay and you'll see the area that is "directly" effected. Then you can plan on some people with more flexible hours, living even further out from the line you drew. You'll notice that Hazen and Beulah are both in the line of fire. That's why you are not fining many places that are available for rent.

It's only 3 months. A camper would be fine. A person doing an internship is going to be pretty scarce on money anyhow and looking to cut corners any way they can. At least I would be. I lived in a bumper pull camper for 4+ years and it was terrific. Then a 5th wheel camper for another 4+ years. I did it year round and had to put up with nasty winters. Your son is going to be doing it during the summer. It's an extended vacation.

It would be ideal to get full hookups, or at least an rv spot that has power to the camper and available shower and water on site. Very dooable.

As you have noticed, most do not list what the maximum stay length is. But even if it's 14 days, a person wouldn't have to move often and with a camper, it's a new experience, new people, new surroundings every couple of weeks.

I agree with you totally. I used to live in Beulah and Hazen and they have some really nice campgrounds to stay at. I would love to live in a camper, if I was single with no kids, I would jump at it if I was in the same situation. Actually my kids are trying to get me to go on the road with them, and work totally via the internet again, lol, who knows.

Used to own a house in Zap, but ended up selling it. Anyways, if it's the Dakota Gasification Plant he could also take showers there after work like a lot of workers do.

Well, I caution that there will be lots of other folks living in campers too. Especially since the info is on here now, lol.
I would still consider it wiser to keep whatever living arrangements he has in Bismark presently through his internship if possible. Just my op.

You do realize that with today's gas prices, it will cost over $1200. in fuel if he goes straight to and back. No extra running around.

That's figured on $3.49 a gallon, today's price in Bismark. 77 miles at 5 days a week. Vehicle that gets 20 mpg.

Staying in a camper could cut fuel price in half. That's a months rent on a decent apartment, outside the Bakken. It would cut rent down to less than $300 a month. Lot's of savings there.
