Default Are there any apartments in Minot for less than $1000/month?

Hi all, I'm a 24 year old bachelor who *might* be moving from northwest Pennsylvania up to Minot for a job at the newspaper there.

I have pretty high student loan bills to pay each month, and so far online I haven't been able to find any 1-bedroom apartments for any less than $1000/month, which I think is completely ridiculous given that Minot is not even a very metropolitan area.

So, does anyone in the area know of any affordable 1-bedroom apartments? I'd like to be able to pay my bills and also be able to feed myself...

I just looked at this: Hot-Ads Minot, ND

Last time I looked at the actual physical newspaper, there were probably 5 apartment ads, no one bedrooms and nothing under $1000.00, although someone has a house they are willing to rent for $10,000 a month, 15 man crew welcome. What you are facing (affordable housing), is a HUGE issue for Minot and the surrounding area at this time. Did you call any of the property management companies in the Minot area? I know people who call property management companies daily checking on availabilities, some have waiting lists, others do not.

Check this out as well: Shortage of housing + outrageous rent = People who aren't making the 'big bucks' leave the area

I wish you the very best of luck in getting yourself into an affordable place. I'm guessing you haven't officially accepted the job?

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely check those sources out!

No I haven't officially accepted the job yet - my potential boss is going to talk to me about the details tomorrow and I'll make a decision after that. If it wasn't for my ridiculous monthly loan payments, I probably could afford an average apartment there (I'm very low maintenance and don't need tons of amenities and creature comforts - just the basics are enough). But the loan payments are a hindrance to how much I can spend on rent.

I have in-laws in Minot and yes the housing there is crazy. Before the flood last summer, the air force base there expanded and added a new missile wing that was stationed near Pensacola, Florida. That brought new folks to town, yes many live on base but not all. The flood destroyed many homes and duplexes and pushed a lot of people to find housing elsewhere. Many live in Fema trailers and many took whatever else was available.

Thus right now demand is more than supply. There are new apartments being built but with the demand high, prices are high as well and are often rented out before being built.

I know craiglist has many bad ads, but there are some legit ones (check the north dakota section or bismarck section). I have seen two ads for renting out rooms in a house or apartment, one for 900/mo and other 600/mo.

room for rent (http://nd.craigslist.org/roo/2987960133.html - broken link)

Beyond having a roomate situation or sharing a house, selection will be very slim to none and prices quite high. Be aware there are spammers posting many ads on the housing craiglist in the state, with crazy low rent prices and they lead to a 866 number. I believe these are from Florida.... I read one that said close to I-95 in north dakota. So safely ignore those.

I may have the only one. I pay 900 and it is very dumpy. I got some inside intell saying the landlord could get at least 1200 and that may be happening soon. your best bet may be trying to room up with someone

More I look into it, the more it looks like I won't be able to afford living there. With my hefty student loan bills coupled with outrageous rent, and the modest wage I would most likely be making, I think I'll take my chances elsewhere.

I found other job opportunities in Lisbon and Fargo, so I might try going to one of those places. Fargo right off the bat already has a ton of 1-bedroom apartments listed in the $300-500/month range - much more affordable. Too bad though, I really liked Minot from what I read about it. Oh, well!

Fargo is big enough that it has a big internet presence with no shortage of info. But what about Lisbon? Anyone know much about there? I know it's a small town, and that's fine, I grew up in a small town and didn't mind the small-town living.

If you have a job offer in Fargo I would jump on that. Fargo is the most progressive city in N.D. Lots to do there...some real single life options, lots of culture. Any type restaurant you could want. If you are looking for a career move, by comparison to the other cities in N.D. you mentioned....Fargo is the best option imo
