I Might be Going to UND
I've been looking at different aviation schools becuase I want to be a pilot after college, and UND looks like it has a great aviation program. I was just wondering what kind of city Grand Forks is like. I'm from Southern California, and i know it's cold in the summer. Are there any good places to go snowboarding in the winter around GF? Anyways, any information is great, and thanks for any help.

Ryan:
The flat topography in Eastern North Dakota makes traditional snowboarding difficult - but snowkiting (snowboarding with kite sails) is getting increasingly popular:

If you are into aviation, you'll really like UND's College of Aerospace Studies, as it is really dynamic, growing into many different fields, and there are students from almost everywhere. Most students from out of state that attend UND for the aviation program really love it.
Grand Forks will be a change for you if you're coming from Southern California. The community is probably much less materialistic and much more personable than what you are used to. On the flip side, don't expect a lot of urban amenities - trendy shopping or night life - or beaches/mountains.

Grand Forks
Wow, reading these posts about Grand Forks sure does bring back memories. I lived in North Dakota for much of my childhood. There just is no place better in the entire USA!!
I have lived in Florida for the last 28 years or so. How I wish I would have never left North Dakota in the first place. My children are all so wonderful and I thank God for them; however, I should have raised them there instead of here. While Florida is a great place to visit, it doesn't rate so high as a place to live anymore - at least not in my book. There just is no comparison. No disresepct intended. This of course, is a personal opinion and not intended to ruffle anyone's feathers. Coupled with the high property taxes, homeowners insurance prices, crime, fast paced living, and constant hurricane damages, we have decided to start chapter two somewhere else.
Within the next couple of months we intend to relocate to Tennessee or North Carolina, maybe even Colorado. Obviously we are not real sure yet! I do know that Florida will be part of my past then. Wish I could get the nerve to go back to the Dakota's; however, after being away for so many years, I'm not too sure I could endure those winters any longer!
As for the arts, Minnesota is top notch. Lived there too for a short while.

Contrary to popular belief North Dakota is not cold in the summer. Average temps are in the 80's and can range anywhere from the mid 60's to over 100.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound harsh. When we were going to move here from AZ, there were actually people who thought we had cold and snow 12 months straight.
Don't worry so much about the cold. You can always put more clothes on or just turn up the heat a bit and be cozy warm. I lived in Phx for 8yrs. In the heat, you can only take of so many clothes and you are STILL HOT. In ND you can always add another layer and be warm. I find it much easier to warm up than to cool off.

North Dakota and UND are great!
I'm from SoCal too and recently move3d to Neche, ND. I go to UND once a week to the art/music department, and I love UND and Grand Forks in general. It is beautiful hhere, especially in the northeastern rural areas where it is very wooded and quiet with lots of lilacs and rivers and wildlife. Yes, it is cold in the winter, but its true you can bundle up, and the people here make all the difference. So helpful and friendly (esp. in rural areas where there's not too many of them). Make the leap! It's America's best kept secret!
