Sea Food/Mexican restaurants in NoDak..
Will be moving from California to Lake Metigoshe in about 6 months. We will be missing the many great Sea Food and Mexican restaurants we have in California. Was wondering if there was anyone out there that might suggest a great Sea Food or Mexican restaurant in North Dakota. We will be retired, so if we had to drive a little, that would be okay.
Thanks in advance!....

There's a Mexican place in Bismarck near kirkwood mall that's somewhat authentic though I'm not an expert on Mexican food (just judging by restuaraunts I've been in the rest of the US (NJ,NC, & MO) that people say are "authentic" - not actual Mexican places). Unfortuanatly I don't remember the name of the place. There's Fiesta Villa - I wouldn't call this authentic Mexican more like North Dakota Mexican - i.e. a strange mix of Mexican, Native American (Indian Tacos) & alot of alchohol. I'd imagine there are a few other places I'm forgeting.
As far as Seafood, I don't think Bismarck has a dedicated Seafood restuaruant other than Red Lobster (chain). The Bistro has great Seared Tuna. East 40 has great Sushi but only one or two nights a week (who'd have thought but its actually alot better than most I've had in the rest of the country) . There are alot of places with Trout & whatnot - not sure if you'd consider that "Seafood" as it probably came from a river or lake. Hopefully someone who's lived in / been to Bismarck more recently can help you out a little better.

Good News for you,
Here in Minot, we have a Mexican family starting up their second restaurant. The restaurant should be open in about 3 weeks. Due to some construction problems, there was a 4 week delay. But no more. As for seafood, Minot now has a restaurant called Up The Creek. They serve, can you guess, seafood and other types. It's OK, but I like Red Lobster, which is in Bismarck.
Welcome to North Dakota. What made you pick Lake Metigoshe?

Personally, I think the quality of restaurants is one of the major issues holding ND back. Compared to the freshness of California food, there aren't many choices. Fifty years ago, small town North Dakota restaurants had fantastic food because so many farm wives knew how to cook fresh food or bake real whole-grain bread, and prepare fresh deserts (rhubard, juneberry, chokecherry, apple) for huge numbers of people. Now, you can hardly get anything green, or fresh, or even get toast that is properly done in small town ND. A potato tot is almost a delicacy.
With all the nutritious food (wheat, durum, barley, oats, rye, buckwheat, sunflowers) that is raised in ND, most of it goes out-of-state and comes back as inedible factory food. Of course, there are exceptional small-town restaurants in ND, but, sadly, the lack of a better food culture in ND (sugar and white flour are now the staples) is badly hurting the overall health of the state. North Dakota's generally look at food more as sustenance than as physical and cultural nourishment. OTOH, coffee time is sacred.

Seafood... Center of the nation. yeah sea food not a good option but Pike and Walleye are great....
Dickinson is 4 hours from that area, but if you are passing threw El Sombero. Is probably the best one in the state.
Beef is way better in ND then Cali and I have pleanty of friends that moved here from Cali for school the love the beef.

Just want to once again thank everyone for all the great posts. Not that my wife and I are vegetarians, we just don't eat red meat. Haven't for years. But, pork, poultry, and SEAFOOD yes! I'll be looking forward to catching my first walleye on Lake Metigoshe, which in MHO is the best fresh water fish on earth. Minot will not be too far from us, in doing some research I found a Joey's Seafood restaurant in Minot (a chain), but the Joey's website dosn't have Minot listed. Anyone know?
Thanks!

if you are living by Lake Metigoshe you could catch all the fresh fish you could handle just about year round. its been awhile since i fished metigoshe but usually if you have a boat its pretty good. you could also fish some of the other lakes in the turtle mountains. as for mexican food the only place that i liked for mexican food is acapulco in fargo, its family owned and i dont want to sound out of line or racist but i believe they are hispanic.
but moving to north dakota you are probably going to have to give up the authentic mexican food and go with some of the local fare.
i strongly suggest you try lutefisk.

Weiserheiser is right about El Sombero in Dickinson, it's one of the best Mexican places I have tried. (who would have thought!?) The combo #6 is great!
East 40 in Bismarck is very good for seafood and if you like steak they can do that too. Their Filet Mignon is outstanding.

There is a really good Mexican Restaurant in Minot but I can't think of the name. It's located on Burdick Expressway East right in front of the baseball stadium.
