You would really need to make a visit to anywhere you are looking to retire. Spend a week or two. Poke around and see what you think.

I have only been through Hettinger so don't really know a lot, but I will tell you it is not exactly a growing thriving community. Beyond that I can't tell you much.

If I were going to retire to a small community, I would find one within 20 miles of a larger city where they have amenities such as shopping and dining. Even if a small community has a grocery store there is no guarantee that it will still be in business a year from now.

Hettinger is actually a nice little community. What is pretty unique about it, is it actually has a thriving regional hospital that supports the rural towns and counties in SW North Dakota and NW South Dakota. They have a nice link to their town...check it out.
Welcome to Hettinger, North Dakota

If you are looking for middle of nowhere, you'll have found it in Hettinger. The nearest city of Bismarck is at least an hour away. I'm sure the people ar enice though, as they tend to be that way anywhere in small town ND. I am assuming you're white, of course. I'm not sure how they'd take people of other colors in an area like that. As others have said though, it isn't exactly thriving and you'll probably see it shrink...
