OK you guys. You keep leaving out Minot. Minot is a mid size city that offers just a much as Fargo and Bismarck. A University, shopping centers, etc. Minot is a great place to live. As you seen in previous comments, check out the job web sites and that will help you choose your location. Minot has been getting a lot of attention lately from oil companies. We've already had a couple set up their offices here and we have another one looking at Minot now.
If that refinery ever gets built, you'll see a lot of oil workers shifting over. If that refinery pay scale is true, it'll take a lot of workers from everyone.
What other skills do you have other than oil? ct

The "Minot is a mid size city that offers just a much as Fargo and Bismarck." is probably a bit of a stretch but, like I said before, if you want an Oil job, Minot may be a preferable alternative to Williston. Minot is definitely worth checking out if you're moving to ND .

The West half of the state is where the oil is. 2000 jobs give or take in the patch are available right now!!!
Dickinson has some of the best Schools in the state and is very clean and safe!!

I agree about Williston and Dickinson being the Oil towns of ND. I'm not sure where Minot is coming into play here. Minot is 70 miles from the plays in the Parshall-NewTown Stanley areas...not any farther from Williston. Minot WILL get some satellite shops to service the fields in the eastern part of the Williston Basin...but that is not uncommon. Many shops from Dickinson and Williston open up smaller ones away from their own regional offices to accomodate the newest area of play. But when you see places like Sanjel building a new 14million campus in Williston, and Knight oil opening up in Williston, and Halliburton currently expanding and adding on to their Williston campus...I'm afraid Minot might get the smaller satellite offices is all...with the exception of Amerada Hess (who are moving their regional from Williston to Minot...because of Minot's jet service it offers). But yes, Dickinson-Williston will always be ND's Oil towns. But all in all...Oil companies tend to open up and operate out of the current oil towns and build smaller ones outside of that. Oil has been king in Dickinson and Williston for 50 years, and it won't be changing anytime soon.
Some examples of what is happening in Minot, has happened to satellites towns like Belfield, Bowman, Tioga, Watford City, Fairfield, Sidney, Killdeer. They open up shops in these towns, but the main offices and service shops are all still out of Dickinson and Williston. Has been that way for 50 years. When things slow down, they pull back, and either close up the satellites, or skeleton crew them...but they always keep the main offices open for the most part. That is why Williston and Dickinson still have all the service and oil companies after so many years of the boom bust cycles.
If they discover huge fields EAST of Minot...then that might be a different story. Then Minot would get the main shops like Dickinson and Williston to take care of the Eastern part of the state.
As far as the refinery in Minot...I still haven't seen or heard about this...just that someone from Minot said it would be a great place for one (between Minot and Bismarck)...but the only ones in the planning stages are the ones in Makoti, and the one near Williston. But time will tell.

Hi, another area to consider is Minot. Minot has a lot of jobs openings. Like the comment above, check out the site at Job Service North Dakota . This will help you determine where you live. As a Minot native, of course I would recommend here. We are the 4th largest city, but we have lots of activities. The best is during the summer when we have free outdoor concerts in the parks. We have the largest zoo in the state, host the State Fair, and the annual Scandinavian Hostfest. Right now, Oak Park is fully decorated with Christmas displays, and for a $5 donation, you drive through the park. The money is used for the local non-profit organizations here in Minot. Anyway, enough about Minot, good luck in choosing a new home. ct

blackballed
Why would anyone blackball anyone, I have done nothing that I know of to be blackballed except show up every day I was laid off because there were no more openings for Hess and employer is strictly working for Hess now but he has had the same employees for years with little turnover. I just helped him out through a busier time for Hess to get ready for their increase in activity.
