Minneapolis to Rugby, ND
Hello all,
I'm planning a trip to North Dakota in early March. I will be flying into Minneapolis and from there renting a car and driving to Rugby, ND. I am wondering how driving conditions would be at that time of the year. Will I encounter any problems? Any tips?
Thanks

March is hit-and-miss. You might have perfectly dry roads all the way there, or you might be in the middle of a snowstorm. My main advice is to be over-prepared. Have warm clothes in the car, a winter survival kit, and watch the weather forecasts. Chances are pretty good that the roads will be okay, but March can be a big snowfall month as well, which can mean bad visibility.

Plan ahead, if you do 70 as much as possible than you can make the drive in 7 hours.

Don't take chances. If weather is getting bad, get a motel room, a hot toddy, a good meal, and watch a movie. It's a lot better then watching all the semi's pass you buy while your setting in the ditch.

Having grown up in North Dakota, (I now live in Twin Cities area in Mn) I made the trip between the Fargo Moorhead (MN) area many, many times, over many years. The thing to remember is if it seems fine, with light snow (March can be unpredictable-believe the weather people & don't believe them) & wind, you can find yourself in a "white-out" in no time. Don't take chances, don't get over confident because "seems like the highway is empty and just for me"- don't drive with your cruise control on in March highways, conditions can change unexpectedly. And yes, take your winter survival gear, lots of cell phone providers services don't work when you get close to Rugby, but you may reach the Highway Patrol with "911."
