Do you mean that all 50 of the residents of Strassburg are unpleasant, German-speaking xenophobes? I actually find that hard to believe. You must be exaggerating a bit to illustrate your point, aren't you?

Hi There,
Which area are you interested in?
I live in Grand Forks but I am moving to Fargo this summer. Both communities are very safe and friendly. I prefer living in Fargo, however, just because it is a bigger city and there is much more to do-stores, restaurants, events, etc. Grand Forks is a big hockey town-Go Sioux!! As far as the winters, they are pretty hard at times. Usually, we only get into the brutal temps for about 2 weeks every winter, but the averages are usually below 20 degrees in the winter months-December, January, & sometimes February. The last few years, we really haven't received tons of snow-actually the snow mobiling businesses have gone down because of it. The summers do get pretty humid-but many people around here head to the lakes every weekend during the summer. In general, many people who live in these 2 cities like where they live, enjoy the community, and are forced to 'tolerate' the cold for a short time. Hope this helps a little.

Strasburg or Strassburg?
Well, in either case (Emmons County or Sheridan County), I would be really suprised to find that high of a percentage of mean and angry local residents. Here is an interesting link to ethnic Germans from Russia who settled in North Dakota.

It's always interesting when someone talks about 100% of a given population people being prejudice or mean or some other stereotype. I think those kind of statements make it clear where the problem lies. Even if he had just said, most or many of the people he encountered were that way, it could be believable, but when you make such blanket statements like everone from a given town is mean and hates outsiders is just hate mongering in itself. Looking at the wording of his post makes me think it could just be some kid goofing around on the internet or someone very poorly educated.

can anyone tell me where the cheapest housing is in the great state of North Dakota, I am considering a move here maybe, Ive been looking on ReMax at the housing and not real sure which cities seem the lowest...the market being the way it is nationwide, I would imagine there are many foreclosures all over, but just curious...sure do appreciate all the other well informed and honest postings though...Im a southerner from Florida, and am thinking about a move...any help is greatly appreciated...thanks alot.
can I ask one more question...I have looked at many houses in the northern states on line, and one thing I am TOTALLY enchanted with is that so many of them seem to have stained glass in them, the windows seem to be long or in doors or small off the wall places, I notice them in many of the homes Ive seen in Ohio Remax listings...I think these are just gorgeous, realizing they may have been built in the later centuries I suppose is why they are there, but you see nothing like that here in the south, at least I havent, unless it was in New Orleans or Savannah...do the homes in ND have many stained glass appearances, just wondering, I am really falling in love with those and would truly adore a warm fireplace that had that glistening thru it in the morning stained glass filled with sun or at night with moonlight...thank you for letting me go on, I am trying very hard to find out as much as I can about housing...and this aspect is very attractive to me also...

Sparco,
In my research, I have found that the national realty websites do not show listings in the smaller, less expensive towns which is where you are apt to find the older houses with stained glass windows. The larger areas are well covered, and also offer affordable houses with those features, but the the small towns often have the real gems. Good luck with your search.

Cheap housing
Sparco
On the average the cheapest housing is going to be in small towns the furthest from the the larger towns. That is not to say that you can't find cheap housing in bigger towns. Cheap housing in Fargo is going to be different then cheap housing in Beach ND and different then Florida. My recomendation would be to determine what amenities you are looking for and use that to determine where you would want to live and then search for cheap housing. There is a lot of good info on this forum. If you have any specific questions, direct message me and I'll try and help.

Fargobob and PrarieRose, thank you both so much for your great replies! ...I am a huge lover of the Victorian old homes, finding them here in the south is easy but they are much cheaper up north it seems and also, the ones here are located in what are now usually higher crime neighborhoods. Not real sure how that has evolved down here but it is a real shame, the houses in Riverside, Jacksonville, where I have looked are gorgeous, and some have the stained glass but are like I mentioned very high crime areas. I notice the same about the realty sites, Prarie, and thought it was just me, so thank you for that input. Fargobob, I have TONS of questions, lol...so when I get organized good I will definitely email you if you dont mind... I love Florida very much, but it is getting very expensive to continue living here and Im anxious to leave the heat as I get older. ND seems so lovely and I would enjoy a new culture of people. Having lived here all my life, born in Alabama and then came here around the age of 6, its hard for me to imagine any other home but here, but Id seriously like to give it a try, the heat and humidity indexes here in the summer have cost me 3 air conditioners already, I just cant take it anymore. I have one son age 17, and a daughter who is 20 so they may come with me also. Thanks again so much. Maybe someday we could even meet. I am hoping soon to plan a trip up. I check your temps daily on the Yahoo temperatures and WISH WISH WISH I was already there!!!!!! ....thank you again sooo much.
