It's people helping people and trusting in them. Which is a rare gold find today.
First off, my father was raised in Ypsilanti ND and even though I was raised in Texas, I was raised by an ND man with ND values and stern rules. My father never met a person that he did not quickly develop a form of friendship, brief or lengthy in time. My mother was born in Texas. So now here you have an adult who is the product of lets say both worlds. ( I have family here on my father's side)
Now I know there has been changes over time, with people and I understand that. However, I have often wondered was it my father's environment the reason for his easy go lucky manner that people just took to him, or was it a personality he developed over time? (things he had endured through his time in the Army?)
Secondly, I've also read it said, that things that go on in other states, don't go on in ND and that it is a state that has (I hope I say this right) seemingly gone untouched by outside influence.
I never really thought I belonged in Texas. I'm a country bumpkin. I like the idea of milking a cow and did so when I was growing up in Texas on my aunt's farm in the summer months in the country. I also had a couple of ponies, you know so...
For me being here are nostalgic moments for me as I look back over time wishing time could stand still. (time frame here his birth 1920-1982)
And in my conclusion, my father was the warm friendly derived from a good ND background. He never met a man that he did not become friends with.
And a note for Dave:
I haven't found a church yet. But I am in pursuit.

Hi Renee, I am the one that posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about starting a church in dickinson. My family and I are looking to move there in around the end of april. We are so excited when we can get to know the folks there. I actually live in maine right now. So as far as the cold weather I'm used to it. We have already received about 130 inches of snow this year. Like dave norris said if you are looking for a church, we would love to have you come. Obviously it is not in dickinson yet, but we plan on doing Bible studies in our apartment as soon as we arrive. Good luck in your work in dickinson, and maybe you could meet my wife and family sometime.

PM me when you arrive so we can meet. I think I have it set up where people can send me PM's. And it is warmer here than it is there. I arrived first week in Feb. East has had it much worse it seems than the west. So you will get a little bit warmer in temps. Dickinson did have the stuff! I think it is called snow. I'm from southern texas, so excuse the humor. Just me let me know. I look forward to meeting you and in good fellowship as well.

Hey, don't forget about me. I wanna meet you guys (and families) too. Once we get back up there that is.
Changing the subject - and you'll have to bear with me on this a little, but I've got it figured out. A couple days ago I heard on the radio that they did a study about self-regulation and how children's self-regulation has changed over the years. The study went something like this if I remember right... Years ago, maybe 20 or 30, can't remember for sure. That had children of vatious ages stand motionless as long as they could. The 5 (or 7) year olds could only stand still for a couple minutes, but as they got older, they were able to stand still for longer periods of time. Well, they redid that study recently and found that the children of today have less self-regulation than those kids. Todays 10 year old had the equivalent self-regulation of a 7 year old from the earlier study. Well, the ages and stuff may be off, but I expect you get the point. So if self-regulation is making yourself do the things you are supposed to do and not do the things you aren't supposed to do then North Dakotans have very high levels of "self-regulation". That's why they can let you skip paying for a meal, and know you'll come back later to pay. Same reason you can leave your keys in the car with it running on those cold days and noone messes with it. People know you are supposed to leave other peoples property alone and becuase of good self-regulation, they do.
Guess I'm generalizing here, because we all know there are a few bad apples wherever you go. But who says generalizing is a bad thing? I think it's got a bum rap. I don't think generalizing is such a bad thing.

Well Dave, I lived in a bubble and my bubble was bursted when I moved to Dallas. I learned things, that I really could have gone a life time of not knowing and it would have suited me just fine. It is because of what you have mentioned above, ND really doesn't want to bring in outside people here. They may think they do, but they don't. It's a good secret and we should keep it. Now a retention plan would be good to have so as the young adults stay put and raise their children here and growth can be built from with in. I don't know exactly how that would work, since an obvious outside resource can also benefit. Give me slack, I'm not up on ND stuff yet. I've only been here a month. and...
I really don't want to go back. I'm here for the year and in that year I have to figure it out. I do plan on a re application and in that I can extend my stay for another 2 years if accepted and living allowance funds are available, 3 in total. I have three children that are older, and I hope to be able to influence, follow me. (one grand baby girl)
I raised 'em and none of them marked on the walls when they were little. Well I found out later that did, but they washed the walls. lol They're not perfect.
Leaving the car running, I'm still not use to that. I've done it, but it's going to take some time and I am always, wow, imagine that, it's still there!
And we haven't forgot about you Dave and I need to locate your posts, so as to get to know who I'm talking to. Are you the one with the two boys? I remember seeing that one.

PS. I'm also still not familiar with all the abilities of this message boards does and don't and stuff. I've been going back over the stickies and trying to grasp, in my spare time.

Hello. This is my first time here. I am thinking about relocating to ND, not sure where. A place that has less wind & where I can find work. I am a single, 57 year old woman that is living on a small retirement pension & cannot afford to continue living in the state of MD. Since I have never beent to ND, I was wondering if this state has diversity of cultures like MD? Here we have people of all colors & backgrounds. Thanks to all.

All I know is that my family and I are planning to move to Dickinson in the end of April or early May. We are going there to start a non denominational Bible believing church. My wife is actually from Maryland. She lived in Forest Hills close to Bel Air. As far as housing, we have applied to low income apartments through metroplain. We can't afford much either. If you want to do research on Dickinson ND, just google the name dickinson north dakota and you will see their website listed first. They have a very nice website that has been updated recently. A good person to talk to about Dickinson on this forum would be Daved Norris who has lived in dickinson in the past, and is moving there again in June with his family. I have talked to him at length and he is a very nice person. We actually are planning to get together when we move there. If you are looking for a church, we plan on having Bible studies as soon as we arrive in dickinson. We will probably meet at first in our apartment. And if you choose dickinson, maybe you could get together with my family for a time of fellowship. If you have any questions that I may be able to answer, just send me a direct message. Nice to meet you and have a good day.

Once again if you are trying to avoid wind, ND is not the state for you. ND is not a ethnically diverse place, but it is ethnically tolerant place.

Moving to ND
Thanks for your input. I still plan on moving to ND, maybe Dickinson area. If this area is safe & people respect one another, that is all I am looking for. Doesn't a lot of Native Americans live there?
I heard that the winds are not as strong as other places in ND.

I stopped into see and woe, you guys are chat 'en. The woman I work for in the office was telling me where the Native Americans are living. I know not any in Dickinson, she said Devils Lake and mentioned a few other places. As for as the wind. I have only been here since the first of Feb and can only report, so far, not so bad. I really expected a lot worse. If this area is how they say is comparable to East Texas weather, then not in the windy season then, yet. That'll be around April. Every one has been nice and friendly. I'm having fun with my southern draw accent. I read here on the message boards some saying ND's are reserved. Could be that is why I fit right in, because I pretty much keep to myself, but I have times of humor when out and about too. One thing I did have to get use to that comes from the old time country that I grew up. If eyes meets your's be prepared to give a greeting of the day. They will speak to you.
I know I want some Indian Tacos and I am zeroing in on them.
