Question Volunteer Worker Relocation Dickinson, ND

Need eyes and ears at the end of my travel.

Hello Dakotas:

I recently submitted an application and I am currently under interview status. So as it is...

Volunteer worker on low level income, relocation to Dickinson ND and I need help in locating affordable housing on an income budget of under $1000.00 per month.

If all goes well with my application I would be expected to complete the relocation process by the end of Jan 2008. Since this is volunteer work, I am expected to live, as do the people I will serve, at economical poverty level.

I have familiarized myself with your posts.

Please do not tell me about the snooty vs. warm and friendly people. Those people are a dime a dozen no matter what geographical area one pinpoints to live in the world. People are human, hello.

Please do not tell me about weather. We have shifts in climate in all parts of the world. Hurricane Katrina, Rita, the Tsunami, the fires in California, just to name a few in the recent where people have lost their homes, their lives and they were forced to relocate whether they wanted to or not. And as you travel back through the history of science and weather, there have always been shifts from the mild to the extremes. Its just weather.

Please do tell me there is affordable housing, furnished would be nice. Please do tell me where they maybe and how to locate it and whom, I should contact. My efforts so far have been the classifieds of the Dickinson Press and Renters.com. In the newspaper published on the web there are phone number listings and I will phone this next week.

However, perhaps a member of this forum may have a rental unit, or a family member that knows of living accommodations that will fit a low-income level budget.

A bit about myself: My father was born in Ypsilanti ND and I have cousins in and around the Fargo, W. Fargo area. I was raised in East Texas and accept that for 4 years of life in Colorado Springs I have yet to experience life outside of Texas. And I look forward to this adventure. I remember visits as a child to ND during times of family reunions.

The forward progression of my application has come sudden, so my cousins are not aware yet of what has happened or may be about to happen, yet.

Please if any one can help, do respond.

Thanks in advance,

Hi, and welcome back to North Dakota. This is Dickinson's website: http://www.dickinsonnd.com/ You'll find some of the information there. At this website, just click on the links until you get to either the rentals or real estate. You'll be able to find a home less than $50,000. Dickinson is a nice area and has some of the best scenic drives around the state. You'll enjoy it there. Good Luck. ct

Hello all:

I am getting assistance throught the organization that I will be working for this next year. Wonderful friendly people! I love it and I can't wait to get there.

I talked to a woman on the phone yesterday and she told me she would visit the rentals. She told me that if it wasn't a place in which she would live, she'd pass on it. I thought to myself this woman is going to take time out of her busy schedule to assist me in my living arrangments. I could have hugged her.

So, I will have a knew career, one in which I look forward to. A new place to live. And after I have been there a year for my one year of service, if I like it, may I never see Texas again.

With that low level of income you should be eligible for section 8 housing....I live in Fargo and the wait time was only 6-9 months..good luck !

I've been operating a small buisness since 2003. Your name, well lets just say is intriguing, because I have a customer and a good work relationship with a GregW.

To answer your question it is with out food. I'm poverty low-level income any way and I'm not on Food Stamps, can't say as I never was, but it has been several years. Going through the process took too much time away from trying to get to work to mess with it.

I don't know how much I can say with out getting into trouble. However it is a great opportunity and as with all opportunites it isn't for every one.

google, AmeriCorps.

I want to help people and I can't afford to do it on my own. In times of emergency I am always in awe of how quickly the organizations respond and set up camps. People come together and we try to make it better.

Default Experiencing ND Winter

I have finished my relocation from Texas to North Dakota. I came to this forum site through a search for information. What better way to learn the real stuff than by the people who live in the state right?

I have seen good stuff posted here and I have seen some not so good stuff posted here.

However, after being here for 2 weeks and getting involved with the community I do not see the not so good stuff.

Some one posted clean restrooms. Yes they're right. Very clean. I assume because people care enough not to mess things up and those in the service part care about their reputation for cleanliness. What a concept.

I was literally given an apartment okay. Very nice woman and very understanding about the situation. She didn't have to be, she could have said, I'm sorry...

Cashiers are friendly and trust me that this is important to me as one who has been on both sides of the counter.

And the cold it was 37 degrees out today and I only needed to wear my blazer jacket. Wow. Even with that on and inside my car I was wanting to shed it as well. I rolled the windows down.

So I don't know on the negative side of things yet. Maybe it is too soon to say, not sure, but so far the move here has been a wonderful God send to me!

renee

PS those wishing to relocate to ND, come on in the water is warm! I hope I get the quote right, Mark Twain, "cool waters"? "safe waters"? safe passage anyway....

Hi Renee,

Glad to here you've made it to Dickinson. It's a great place! Saw on the Dickinson Website (my home page!) that it was 15 degrees there today. Hope you've found a church home there. Can't wait for me and my family to return there - soon, soon, soon!

Hey Dave;

I had read in different places on the message board saying people were not very friendly. Some said they were, and some said they weren't. I thought well I guess I'll find out when I get there. Well, um, any time I am out and my eyes meet some one else's, they say, "hello, how are you?" Or great day isn't it! The store clerk gave me a discount on auto wash and it was a discount with fill up. I got discounted because I had filled up a week ago and she remembered and...

I don't know about this unfriendly thing, cause I haven't got to it yet.

Dave hurry home, you're missing all the fun!

Renee

It's funny but your story about the car was reminded me of something that happened to me a several years back. I had been working on my truck one summer afternoon and was pretty grubby and when It got close to supper time I didn't really feel like making anything for supper so I decided to run to Scotty's (another great burger joint in Bismarck) I went inside and ordered and when I went to grab my wallet I am sure my eyes must have gotten as big as hub cap as I realized I had taken out my wallet to be more comfortable laying underneath the truck and had forgot to grab it. The lady taking the order asked me what was wrong I explained what had happened she said "don't worry you can come pay us back some other time." I went from embarrased to shocked (and still embarrassed) I stammered and blurbed out something to the effect of "really? I will go get it right away! She told me not to worry it happens all the time. I couldn't believe it there I was in greasy grimy clothes that most people would not have wanted to give me the time of day let alone loan me $ for supper. I did go back home right away to pay it back, but it was nice to know they weren't worried about it. Of course there was that story on the news a few years back of the town in N.D. (can't remember which one now) that they left the gas pumps on all night so people could get gas while the station was closed. Ya gotta love N.D.
