Greetings..I'm of German ancestry and darn proud of it. And, I may be moving to the Harvey-Devil's Lake area. Can anyone give me some info. on how newcomers are rec'vd. Also, when does it get cold and which month does winter break? Are there some business opportunities in the summer months near the lake? Thanks.

I grew up in between Harvey and DL (north of Maddock), and I don't think you should have any problem as a newcomer. The rise of the lake over the past decade has led to some influx of new people to work with the Devils' Lake tourist industry (the fishing is WAY better than it used to be). Generally, that region has been suffering from population outflow since the 1930s, so people are happy to have others moving in.

Snow usually hits sometime in November, and usually disappears by April.

As far as jobs go, that can be a difficult situation, and since I haven't lived there or been employed there for over 10 years, I can't really speak to that situation. Devils Lake definitely has more employment opportunities than points west.

more employment than the Williston area? I think you better do a little fact checking, the Williston and Dickinson area are going strong cause of the oil boom. If you want a job and can't find one in that area, something is wrong.

Context! If we're talking about the Devil's Lake-to-Harvey region, most of the jobs are near Devil's Lake and not near Harvey. Since Williston and Dickinson aren't anywhere near Devil's Lake, it doesn't make any more sense to mention them than to mention Fargo or Bismarck.

Lets see you said Devils Lake has more jobs than pointS west you didnt say as opposed to Harvey. Devils Lake and Harvey are no where near Williston? Last time I checked a map DL was probaly around 200-220 miles from Williston and Harvey about 180 or less, so if someone is looking to move to North Dakota because they want to Fish in Devils lake, a 3 or 4 hour drive from somwhere they might be able to get a job vs. somewhere they might not be able to find a job within a 30 minute drive of the lake might choose the job with a short drive to the lake. But cleary I am introducing common sense into the argument, I apologize.

When I read your first post in this thread, I had the same reaction as TravisW. The original poster asked about the Devil's Lake-Harvey area. TravisW simply stated that it would be easier to find a job in DL than near Harvey. Sometimes it helps to reread a post before you try to blow it out of the water.

No he did not say it was easier to find a job in DL than harvey, he said it was easier to find a job in DL than anywhere west of DL. There are a lot of places west of DL that you can find a job easier than DL and with the Oil boom going on, I just had to call that bluff, but there are a ton of places west of Devils Lake to find a job in ND, sorry to burst your bubbles but DL is not the end all be all for ND and everything west of there a desolate wasteland. You would also be able to find a job a lot easier in Minot (also west of DL) than Harvey or Devils Lake. So maybe YOU should read the REPLY.

Okay, fine, there are more jobs in Williston than in Devils Lake.

Taking your logic into account over this, I should still be wrong even if Williston had less jobs, because Seattle is directly west of Devils Lake, and has WAY more jobs.
Williston is over 200 miles from Devils Lake---that's half the state of North Dakota away. If you want to trumpet about all of the oil jobs in Western North Dakota, that's fine. But, the original poster was asking about the Devils Lake-Harvey area. That's the context that I was answering in. Stop putting words in my mouth.

There are less jobs in Harvey, Fessenden, Maddock, Flora, Minnewaukan, Sheyenne, Oberon, Esmond, Baker, Harlow, Leeds, York, Hesper, Hamburg, Bremen, Heimdal, Wellsburg, and Selz than in Devils Lake. There, is that defined enough?

Actually, I said "points west of Devils Lake". I didn't say "anywhere", and I didn't say "all points west". "Points west" denotes a finite number of points west of Devils Lake. It's not a bluff, it's that you took what I typed completely out of context. I'm not hacking on Minot or Williston or Garrison or Velva or anywhere west of Harvey.

Further, I never stated that DL is the be all and end-all of North Dakota. If I believed that, I would have moved to Devils Lake instead of Bismarck, then Fargo. You haven't added anything to this thread that helps the original poster find out more about the Devils Lake-Harvey area. For all we know, they might even already have a job in the region--again, WE DON'T KNOW.

If you want to talk about Williston, there's another thread for Northwest North Dakota.

TravisW clarified his response, and yet you continue to dispute. Your responses to this thread have been unnecessarily snippy. Thanks for welcoming thomas paine to North Dakota.

thomas, as TravisW said before the thread got derailed, you'll have better luck finding a job in DL than directly west of there. Simply put, when the town is larger, there's more opportunity. You're best bet on the west side may be Harvey or Rugby (which is north). The best bet to the east is DL.
