Suggestions on an Area to Live
Hello everyone. I just joined the forum & this is my first posting. I am a 57 year old single woman who needs to move somewhere that has cheap housing, food, & etc...From doing some internet research, I found out that ND might be a place to consider relocating to. I live in the State of MD, where everything is too expensive & impossible to live on a small retirement pension. Could anyone tell me the best place to live that is not too windy? I don't mind the cold or hot weather, just high winds. Also, how can I find out about jobs & cheap apartments? Thanks to all.

Well best of luck, N.D. is called the Saudi Arabia of wind power. We have enough wind power if fully tapped to supply 30% of the total power needs in the US.

Yeah, about the only thing you can be sure of in ND as far as weather is that the wind will blow, the only question is will it be breezy like 10mph, 30mph, or will it really get really windy and go 50 or 60+ mph

Hello Toniemak,
For jobs, start with the state job site, Job Service North Dakota Once you find job that you like, then you can hook up with several apartment sites. For instance, here in Minot, there are several rental agencies that you can call or check on the website for apartments. But first, the job. It won't do any good without a job. What are your skills and education? ct

I would recommend Bismarck as a place to look or Fargo . Should have a good mix of housing, jobs, and also good medical facilities. Also, seems there are active older singles in Bismarck as well as far as dating, my father in law for one who seems to be having a great time at the various things they have for older singles.
As for wind, well, thats a trade off. But, its not like its knocking you down every single day. I think of it like I did of humidity of NC, just go inside. And, unlike NC, it wasn't going on ALL THE TIME!!!

The major cities are Bismarck (55,000), Minot (35,000), Dickinson (22,000), GrandForks (60,000), Fargo (75,000). there are several small towns "class B" as we say under 5,000 and under 1200 population and they are wonderful to live in as well. (Beulah/Hazen two towns that are very nice and inexpensive.

Wow. Don't know where those #'s came from but the 2006 estimates for ND cities is
Fargo _______ 90,000
Bismarck _____ 58,000
Grand Forks __ 50,000
Minot ________ 35,000
West Fargo ___ 21,500
Mandan ______ 17,500
Dickinson _____ 16,000
Jamestown ____ 15,500
Williston _______ 12,500
Wahpeton ______ 7,900
Minot A.F.B. ____ 7,600
Valley City _____ 6,800
Devils Lake _____ 6,700
place like Fargo/West Fargo are pretty much one city along with Moorehead MN, and Bismarck/Mandan are pretty much one city and Grand Forks also has East Grand Forks across the river in MN.

Fargo's official census population in 2000 was 90,599; planners estimate it currently to be around 94,000. Moorhead is about another 36,000 and West Fargo is closing in on 20,000, if it hasn't passed that already. All of Cass County (ND) and Clay County (MN) together as a metro area is probably close to 150,000.

YOu can buy a home for less than the national average, but you have to consider location. How far do you want to be away from a hospital or shopping center. There is a nice house in Crosby for $26,000, but it's out in the middle of no where. Nice town, but limited activities. Something to think about. ct
