Planning on moving to Jamestown ND
I have a new job in Jamestown ND and will be starting at the end of May. I have never been to North Dakota. Is there a better side of town? What is the easiest way to find an apartment that is nice and not run down. Anybody out there like to travel and do some sight seeing of North Dakota? motorcyle? What is there to do for fun? I am a young professional. Is driving to Fargo or Bismark for a weekend or night out of the question?
I would appreciate any and all comments to help my stay in North Dakota that much better.
Thank you.

Hi Phil,
I haven't been to Jamestown yet, but I understand from talking with locals there that they are building a new ethanol plant and a lot of new people will be moving into the area to work on building that plant and then to work at the plant, so I would suggest that you try to make a personal visit there before your job starts to secure housing because housing is about to become in short supply there, if it isn't already. I have heard that some of thw workers at the ethanol plant are currently renting hotel rooms on a weekly basis.
If you can't find any available housing in Jamestown, you might want to also look at Valley City, which appears to be closeby. The freeway which links Jamestown to Fargo is the main interstate. Going into Fargo should not be a problem.
Best wishes with your new job.

I am from Jamestown. Housing is tight, but not horrible yet. Nothing like the oil patch.
They have started work on the power plant, but not the ethanol plant.
FYI Valley City has an oil pipeline from Canada coming through there this summer. So there will be plenty of workers in V.C. too.

Move to Jamestown
Try using craiglist for rentals. You can search by location and price. Also, they often have pictures available. Here is the link.
craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums

Mike,
Mention Craigslist to most North Dakotans and they look at you like you are greek.
I do post some of my vacancies on CL, and get a few responses. Mainly from out of town folks.

Take your picture with the buffalo!
-Buy a block heater and a windshield scrapper.
-Go to a UND/Minnesota Hockey game.
-Drive up to Winnipeg.
-Fargo has some music festivals in the summer.
-I've never been to Sturgis. Then again, I have to pedal my bike.

Phil: My son is temporarily living in Jamestown, ND and working at Goodrich Cargo Systems as a Design Engineer. He is working there on a coop from University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. He loves the job and has made a few friends to hang with even tho he works lots of overtime. Moderator cut: specific realtor info is not allowed Jon rides motorcycle, loves to bike and finds the frisbee golf course rather fun at Jamestown. We live in Bismarck, so if he isn't driving up to Grand Forks for the weekend to finish his aerospace flight training, he comes to Bismarck which is only about an hour and 15 minutes away. Hope this helps. Fargo and Bismarck are easy to get to and there are lots of things to do either place. Good Luck in North Dakota! Jeanne
